Saw the show last night. A few thoughts:

Leading role played by Dawnn Lewis needs to be recast with someone who can play the "comedy" of the show. Also, she goes into her head voice at times during her songs and it sounds weird. But, she has a great voice.

Mother Superior, Sister Mary Robert and Sister Mary Patrick. (Elizabeth Ward Land, Beth Malone, Amy K. Murray)-All Fantastic!

Music is great. The book is funny.

The show seems to go on a little too long though. I felt like I WANTED it to end.

It was a "nice" night at the theater- not "Great". Feels like an "Off-broadway" production more than "Broadway" one.

Was Menken's music memorable? The last original song I heard by him I forgot within a minute.

The songs are top drawer Menken for what that's worth. What stands out are Glenn Slater's lyrics which are incredibly smart and funny - in the David Zippel class. The book barely exists, the music just doesn't stop.

As for the cast, I agree that Dawnn Lewis does NOT cut it as Delores. I also had problems with Elizabeth Ward Land as the Mother Superior. She just doesn't have the vocal chops.

That said, the show WILL come to Broadway and WILL be a hit. With recasting.

Faced with these Loreleis, what man can moralize!

Jennifer Leigh Warren (Big River, Little Shop of Horrors) auditioned for the role and would have gotten it, had the producers not wanted a "name". She would have really taken the show to a higher level...

Stunt casting strikes again!

"It does what a musical is supposed to do; it takes you to another world. And it gives you a little tune to carry in your head. Something to take you away from the dreary horrors of the real world. A little something for when you're feeling blue. You know?"

Good to know Menken's back to himself. I heard this new song from the Aladdin stage show at Disneyland and it was just awful. I don't think he works well when he writes music and lyrics.
Were the lyrics Howard Ashman good? There's a difference between Zippel and Ashman, a large one may I say.

i was at last night's performance too! and although i don't think dawnn lewis needs to be recast... i think she doesn't have the voice... although she can sing... and yes her head voice is really awkward to hear in the songs...

i sat up in the balcony and he first two rows were practically empty!!! kinda discouraging because it was a good show...

and the music is very memorable.... especially when all the nuns get together and sing... although i miss the movie song arrangements... the stuff written for the show is very hummable, in my opinion, especially the act 1 closer...

and btw.... since it was halloween last night... i dressed up as a nun for the show!!!! hahaha... some people thought it was hilarious... i felt weird but hey... it was halloween!!!
