Regency Girls - Pre- Broadway San Diego tryout

Apr 7, 2025 — 5:46:24 PM

Has anybody gone to a preview of Regency Girls at the Old Globe in San Diego? The show had big names in its various workshops- Lilias White, Ariana DeBose, Bonnie Milligan, Lilli Cooper, Lesli Margherita as well as an A-list director, Christopher Gattelli. The show was originally announced to premier at the Goodman Theatre under the title “Female Troubles” in the summer of 2024 but was replaced by “Midnight In the Garden of Good and Evil.” Josh Rhodes is now the director/choreographer. He assem...

Broadway Flops you love that everybody else hates

Mar 31, 2025 — 6:08:30 PM

I'd like to add my two cents to those folks who also love The Wedding Singer and American Psycho.I’m obsessed with musical theatre pastiche scores. There’s just something weirdly magical about a show that commits—really commits—to sounding like it belongs to a specific time or genre. Not in a parody way. More like it got dropped out of a time machine with a fully formed record collection and the confidence to match.Take The Wedding Singer. That score doesn’t just nod at the '80s—it throws on ...

Broadway Flops you love that everybody else hates

Mar 31, 2025 — 2:20:29 PM

I would like to start a new thread about Broadway Flops that you love but everybody else hates. I'll start with Cry-Baby: Let’s be honest: Cry-Baby never got a fair shot. Critics brushed it off like it was some throwaway Grease-lite cash grab, but this musical is way smarter—and way nastier—than most of the crowd-pleasers clogging up Broadway. It’s a razor-sharp middle finger to the sanitized, sock-hop version of the '50s that keeps getting dragged out of the nostalgia bin. Underneath all the...

Bernadette Peters & Lea Salonga to Lead OLD FRIENDS On Broadway

Feb 17, 2025 — 3:53:11 PM

I saw the show on Saturday night 2/18. Bernadette was in great voice. I'm assuming she was able to get medical treatment for her vocal chords which were reportedly in bad shape on Friday night. There are steroid treatments (inhaled or injected) that can relieve vocal strain and even completely suppress the inflammation of a cold or a sore throat. The show definitely needs some work before Broadway. The sequencing was strange and a few of the numbers didn't land. The only weak link was Jason Pe...

Return of Heathers?

Feb 12, 2025 — 7:09:36 PM

It's a great score with a serviceable book but it really needs a top-notch director to get the tone right. I saw the LA workshop and the Off-Broadway NWS productions and felt that the direction just didn't quite get the tone right. It sounds like the West End version was not well directed either. Hopefully a production in the not-so-distant future will feature a director who can really match the perfectly pitched black comedy tone of the movie.

Regency Girls (formerly "Female Troubles")

Feb 12, 2025 — 7:04:38 PM

Amy Archer said: "Commercial producers are 100% attached to it. It is being developed by Robyn Goodman and her producing company, Aged in Wood. I saw thepartially staged workshop production in October and think the showis incredibly smart, wildly sharp and funny, and the timing, given the subject matter, could not be better." Amy, can you please reveal who did the October workshop? I hope they kept Lilias White. She can be hysterically funny, especially if the humor is R-rated. And while she ...

Regency Girls (formerly "Female Troubles")

Feb 11, 2025 — 5:49:29 PM

When Chris Gatelli was attached to the project, Lilli Cooper, Lillias White, Lesli Margherita did that workshop. I am assuming Gattelli dropped out once commercial producers were no longer attached to the project as the Old Globe pays directors at scale.

Regency Girls (formerly "Female Troubles")

Feb 11, 2025 — 5:46:28 PM

Is there any buzz on the show Regency Girls, formerly called Female Troubles. It was initially scheduled for the Goodman Theatre in Chicago until it was bumped by Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. It is not premiering this April at the Old Globe. Would love to know who did the workshop. I am also assuming this is probably a yet-to-be-announced co-production with another regional (Asolo Rep?). Regency GirlsAn original musical comedy from the Emmy Award-winning writers of Veep and Seinfe...

Audra McDonald-led GYPSY for 2024-2025 Season!

May 30, 2024 — 8:08:43 PM

I don't live in NYC but bought tickets for Saturday December 7th, matinee which had much better availability than that Saturday's evening performance.I am now wondering if Gypsy will have an alternate at certain performances and if I bought a ticket for a time when Audra won't be performing. Does anybody know if Audra will really be singing two Saturday shows? And if there's an alternate, can I get my money back or switch to a performance when Audra will be singing.Any advice?

Patti LuPone- A Life With Notes - Concert Tour thread

Mar 18, 2024 — 8:36:46 PM

Patti is going on tour with a new show- A Life With NotesMusic has the power to crystallize a moment in time and evoke eras. In her new concert, Patti LuPone: A Life in Notes, the three-time Tony Award winner performs an array of songs that are touchstones and reflections on her life growing up in America. The songs range from her youth during the burgeoning rock ‘n’ roll scene of the 1950s, to coming of age in the politically and socially turbulent ’60s, to eventually achieving success with ...

Will Jelly Transfer at NY Times review

Feb 23, 2024 — 5:29:36 PM

KJisgroovy said: ""The Pasadena Playhouse is doing Jelly's Last Jam end of May/June. The Wiz returning to Bway in 2023 after National Tour

Feb 19, 2024 — 2:44:44 PM

I saw the show yesterday in Los Angeles. It is a mess:The sets (which will probably get revamped for Broadway) are chintzy. The show relies too heavily on projections. The book problems aren't solved. The show is too long and is badly paced.Everybody is camping it up and screaming like they're on American Idol. The direction is embarrassingly amateurish.Dorothy acting is wooden while the rest of the cast who can act are directed to camp it up.There is no magic or wonder in the land of Oz. The c...

Idina Menzel to star in new stage musical REDWOOD at La Jolla

Feb 19, 2024 — 2:30:50 PM

I saw the shows in previews. It's a mixed bag. The creative staging and the cast are all wonderful. Idina does not disappoint. The show's book is well written and moving. The music is monotonous and lacks melody but it is beautifully orchestrated. I can definitely see this show going off-Broadway. It has a small cast, a small band and easily replicated sets.

Any reports on The Untitled Unauthorized Hunter S. Thompson Musical at La Jolla?

Sep 14, 2023 — 4:29:09 PM

I hated it. The show is about an alcoholic drug-addicted journalist who played a very peripheral role in the events of the 1960's. To carry such a show, they should have cast a bigger than life Johnny Depp-type (Depp played Thompson in "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas movie&quot. Gabriel Ebert, a talented actor, is woefully miscast.Like Iconis' score for "Be More Chill", the music is repetitive, the lyrics are pedestrian and misrhymed, and subtlety has left the building.

Jelly's Last Jam

Aug 8, 2023 — 3:37:53 PM

Don[t be shocked if Pasadena's "Jelly's Last Jam" ends up a being re-cast version of the Encores production. They staged a re-cast version of the Encores/Broadway revival of SITPWG which was well received.

The Funny Girl tour is coming to Los Angeles proper from April 2 to April 28, Chicago has not been announced YET. inception said: "Regarding the Funny Girl tour: does the schedule & logistics seem a bit weird? Or are all tours so convoluted with their schedules? Rumors about Guys and Dolls London transfer to Broadway?

Aug 8, 2023 — 3:30:46 PM

It has been rumored that the Kennedy Center was unable to transfer their Guys and Dolls production to Broadway since the Broadway rights has been snatched up by the London producers of the immersive Guys and Dolls.Anybody hear anything about the timing of a London transfer. It sounds more like a question of when than if.....Would they wait up to a year or more for Here Lies Love to close and use the same theatre? It costs $$$ to convert a theatre. Thoughts? Rumors?

Theater is In Free Fall (Washington Post article)

Jul 6, 2023 — 6:35:09 PM

There are lessons to be learned from the shows that are doing well regionally:1) Audiences do not want to be preached to. They want to be entertained. 2) Audiences want to see musicals and plays with stars.3) If you're going to be charging top dollar for a musical, make sure that you have impressive sets and production values.4) Regional theatres need to have less plays per season and less shows per week. The demand just isn't there anymore.5) Theatre prices need come down. Regional theatres ...
