"110 In The Shade" - Will Audra Get The Best Reviews of the Season?

No. It will be said that she is absolutely phenomenal, and will be Christine Ebersole's biggest competition. But Ebersole got love letters across the board. Audra will got mostly raves too, I would imagine, but nothing competes with Ebersole's insight into her character.

I've been thinking that Donna Murphy is Ebersole's biggest competition.

I don't know about that. I did think that at first, but after seeing her and having time to think abut it I have a feeling that Donna Murphy's take on Lenya won't appeal to everybody. Audra is not only amazing vocally, but she also sells it to the audience. Not that any of this matters since Ebersole is pretty much set to win the award anyway.

"I've been thinking that Donna Murphy is Ebersole's biggest competition."
If anyone is going to give Ebersole trouble it's going to be McDonald.
Murphy is getting raves for a show that is almost universally considered to be unable to live up to the two strong performances at its center.
McDonald, on the other hand, is going to be getting raves for being the highlight of an outstanding production (as "110 in the Shade" is.) Her ability to be that good when the quality around her is so high is an accomplishment in itself.
Going back to the question posed in this thread: while I still find Ebersole to be the one to beat, I think McDonald will get just as many raves and love letters for her performance as Ebersole did (though I don't expect anything as grandiose as claiming it to be one of the finest in musical theater history.)

Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

I agree, something. While I'm sure Audra will get raves, I doubt they will be the love letters calling Ebersole's performance legendary.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

Ditto--- I think Ebersole wins as well, but Audra will get love letters galore. I just love her in this show !
Its such a "feel-good" musical !!!

But harris, Patti didn't get the kind of reviews Ebersole did. And ther were some that predicted LaChanze would win.

Love Patti, but didnt love her in "ST"-
JMHO, but Ebersole and McDonald give better performances.

Btw, does anyone have a firm date for BCR? Amazon lists June, but I thought I saw a May release date at the merchandise booth at the theatre.

I believe that the date for the CD is June 5th.
... I have a question just for discussion: If Audra McDonald wasn't AUDRA MCDONALD, if she didn't have four Tony's, do you think she'd have a better chance at winning?

Tough hypothetical---- I just think its gonna be tough to beat CE this year. Her performance is astounding, but Audra will provide tough competition.

I almost feel dumb asking this, but does anyone feel that the fact the GREY GARDENS has been around for so long already might hurt Ebersole a little? I mean, it feels like GG has been open forever (with its off-Broadway run and whatnot which oepned way back in February 2006). I don't think it'll lose her the Tony by any means, but could it possibly be a liability?

That's not a dumb question; but to answer it, I don't think that the amount of time it's been running will have a big influence. JMHO

I don't think it will matter much.

If anything, it's only allowed time for her buzz to build and to hear more and more people talk Ebersole up. If there was a sizable backlash, it might have hurt her, but there doesn't appear to be.

In the case of CE's performance, I dont think it will hurt at all-

I am not sure if the ballots were counted but if not does anyone feel Audra will get a few votes out of sympathy for the death of her father?
It is a valid question. I want her to win for a number of reasons

You know, that thought went through my head for a moment Roxy. It might have a slight effect on the votes, but I don't think enough to create a win for her.

She won't win, it's a revival of a second-tier show, whereas
Ebersole is creating a career-defining part; it's a no-brainer.
