Saw Corey on Saturday and thought he was wonderful.
And during that show Malik's voice was cracking quite a bit- wasn't sure if he was sick or it was starting to change....

the two times i saw the show i noticed malik's voice cracking a lot...and lots of straining...so yeah his voice is probably changing as we speak...i hope he doesnt strain it to much though!
i personally think they should have doublecasted this show...the kids in it are putting way to much work for their changing voices
#8re: 13 UNDERSTUDIES??
Posted: 10/19/08 at 10:30pmcompletely agree...it's not good for their voices at all

While it certainly isn't good for the boys voices, they do have a voice teacher who I am sure is coaching them through and teaching them how to not strain themselves too badly.
I do feel bad for the boys though, since once their voices change they won't be able to sing the parts anymore and will have to be permanently replaced. I read in an article (I believe from mtv.com) that in their contracts it says a) once their voices change and b) if they grow more than two inches, they will be permanently replaced. If the show stays open long enough, it will be interesting to see how that works out.

"stay open long enough..."
Excuse me! There is a tread about shows that we're surprised posted closing notices. I am surprised that 13 hasn't. It's dull, unoriginal and terribly performed. I was surprised that this show "opened."

Posted: 10/19/08 at 11:27pmHave you seen 13? It plays like a bad after school TV special. The theme of teenage angst is far more complex than the run of the mill, new kid wants to make good and abandons best friend when he discovers that the friendship doesn't come with popularity. Very little about this show was original. Even the score was derivative.

Scott Briefer, your reaction to what I said...well, I really didn't understand what you were trying to say. I also really don't understand how whatever you are going on about has anything to do what I said.
Anyways, I like the show. I hope it has a decent run. I think it's fun and I think it is trying to do a good thing by attempting to get kids into the theatre. I know that people who like the show are in the minority on this board...but geez, do some have to grab at every chance to say something negative about 13?

You're entitled to like this show. I respect your opinion. I am not one to randomly take a swipe at a show because it's popular to do so. The performance I saw, Thursday, was poorly sung. Many - and I mean many - of the notes were sung flat or sharp. The harmonies were off. Not only didn't I like the material, it was executed poorly.

Max Schneider was on for Malcom last night, and this afternoon. Saw him today, he was great. Corey as Evan was a mess. Graham is miles better.
This evening, Eamon Foley (usual Richie) went on for the part, and Riley Costello was on for Richie.

Scott, you are also entitled to your opinion. But I think it is unnecessary to go into a thread that is having a nice, positive conversation and get way off topic with your negative thoughts on the show.
Back to the understundies conversation, I would really love to see Henry Hodges go on as Archie.
I liked Corey as Evan. I thought he played the role a little differently, which I appreciated.

This is so typical of these boards- Its a thread about understudies.. Not about how much many people dislike the show.
We get the point. Loud and clear.

I just posted on another thread about my annoying habit of always finding something good to say about every show I see, but I didn't have to stretch far for 13. I liked it enough for twenty-five bucks to grab another $25 ticket to catch one of the talk-backs with JRB this week. As for the actual topic of this thread...
While I wish nobody ill, everybody needs a day off, and I like to see understudies get their day; there's a certain thrill to it for me. I sincerely hope things work out for Malik, but would likewise enjoy an opportunity to see Eamon Foley step in as Malcolm, he's a talented young man with a bright future. I would also like to see what Henry Hodges can do with this material, which I think is more technically challenging than some folks seem to think it is. This ensemble, understudies included, has a pretty deep talent pool.

Posted: 10/20/08 at 3:54pmEamon Foley plays Richie and understudies Malcolm in 13, but he a vet for this cast and its Gypsy Robe winner. Previously he did a few years in Grinch but was also in the 2004 Assassins and Gypsy last time around.

I didn't know Eamon understudied anyone.
I always thought he would be a great Archie.
Though that might be because he looks a little like Tyler Mann.

sorry guys to get off message on this thread but couldn't let scotty remarks go unchallenged. scotty its safe to say that anyone who post on this thread would have already seen the show before offering an opinion so we can assume "have you seen 13?" as retorical in nature and not an attempt to elevate you opinion above all others who might disagree and from what i've read thats about everyone. lets move on to your next point. if the creative team had wanted to explore every teenage insecurity as you have suggested it wouldn't be a one act play but mini series. i think we can agree that becoming a teen brings with it a kaleidoscope emotions and this is the material they chose to project. and lastly original and derivative mean the same. not real sure what point you were trying to make here. but if you know where this score and subject matter has been preformed on broadway before i'd like to know where to find it
