Im usually wary of 1-person shows, but I ended up really enjoying this one. Phillips and the director very creatively use the lighting and minimal props/sets to conjure up a huge variety of locations, settings, and moods. Even without the staging, Phillips storytelling is engaging, entertaining, and often quite funny. He takes on a ton of different characters, effortlessly slipping to several foreign languages and accents. And while the theme of crossing a national border is a hot-button topic right now, he doesnt lay on the heavy-handedness at all. On a more literal level, its really a story about his traveling experiences (the themes go deeper than that, but as I said, he doesnt go overboard trying to emphasize them).
My only criticism really is that it was just a bit too long, and not all of the stories were as compelling as the others. I would have been perfectly happy with 12 Border Crossings.
It was a shame to see the house so empty for this. I know it was a last-minute addition to their season though, and its not exactly a big-name show. I imagine it cant be hard to get tix for this, so I would definitely recommend it!
