This show does the impossible- it incorporates a 40-minute book scene into a musical.
Its a gem, and it deserves a first class mounting with all the talent it can get.

The greatest line in 1776:
"Someday you must tell me how you did it."

Actually, it's "New York abstains--courteously."
I always loved the little digs about the dysfunctional NY State legislature. Not much has changed!

John Adams- "The Eagle"
Thomas Jefferson- "The Dove"
John Adams- "The Eagle"
Thomas Jefferson- "The Eagle"
Ben Franknlin- "The Turkey!!!!"
BEST PART OF THE SHOW!

*Most of it can't be taken out of context (except maybe "He Plays the Violin," "Momma, Look Sharp" and, with understanding of what it is, "Molasses to Rum.")*
And, with some understanding, "Cool, Cool, Considerate Men" perhaps.

Well, the cast looks like an amazing gathering of talent to me.
This should be the one production of 1776 to catch...actually, performances seem to be only for a month, so if you want to see it, I would buy tickets now...:I
Ah, I love the line about the eagle, dove and turkey, too! In the production I saw, the actor playing BF did a great job with his turkey line...actually, come to think of it, Adams was also played spectacularly.

Posted: 3/1/09 at 5:41pmYou have to go! Seeing James Barbour sing "Molasses to Rum" would be the chance of a lifetime. Also Robert Cuccioli only does stellar work. Conrad John Shuck left me with many childhood memories when I saw him as Daddy Warbucks in the National Tour of Annie. A cast like this cannot be missed.

I know, I never had the opportunity to see Conrad John Shuck perform, so I think this would be the time!
Of course, just hearing James Barbour sing "Molasses to Rum" would be worth the trip
Any word on who will play Adams?

Posted: 3/2/09 at 1:15amI don't know... I'd love to see Barbour and Edelman duke it out for who's the better Rutledge... not that anyone can top Cullum...

Who is playing Richard Henry Lee (one of my favorite characters in the show)?
Also, did they ever confirm Kerry O'Malley as Abbigail Adams?

1776 was the first show that I ever saw on Broadway. I was probably about thirteen years old at the time, sat in a box seat set just above the stage and fell in love with musical theater (not to mention Martha Jefferson ...)
The show was fabulous. It evokes a wide array of emotions and the music (and lyrics) have stayed with me, now more than 40 years later. It's interesting that the most heroic figure in the play is George Washington ("Your Humble Servant ... [drum roll] ... G. Washington"), who never appears on the stage.

"I'd love to see Barbour and Edelman duke it out for who's the better Rutledge... not that anyone can top Cullum... "
AMEN to that! Cullum's portrayal was perfection and his "Molasses to Rum" still makes me shiver.
Just reading this thread is making me get out the DVD. It's a fabulous show on stage and on film.

I'm looking forward to this one, as well. When I saw it, regionally, the actress did a great job, but I'm sure Lauren will top that performance x10.
I still can't believe that they are actually having this show on this side of the country at this time...I guess "election " year was a great catalyst to bring me this amazing opportunity to see this also amazing cast!
