I love the OBC to pieces, and the revival is good as well.
Am I the only one who thinks it strange that this particular show got a London production?
I realize they get many distinclty American shows (just as we get many distinclty British and Irish shows here), but 1776?
The London cast starred the wonderful Lewis Fiander* who later repeated the role in the Australian production (also a fast flop). I bought the album (vinyl) about 15 years ago in a sale for 50 cents.
*Lewis Fiander is an Australian actor who had considerable success in London. He was Hal Prince's first choice for the role Oscar Jaffee in ON THE TWENTIETH CENTURY (the role that eventually was played by John Cullum).
I know this is juvenile but…
I find the idea of a London production of 1776 quite humorous considering who lost who the war.
That's was i was saying Hum. Can you imagine the reaction during the song Momma Look Sharp?

"President Richard Nixon was given a private screening of the movie before its release by his friend Jack L. Warner, the producer. The song "Cool, Considerate Men" offended Nixon, so Warner removed it at his request. The song was restored on the Deluxe Widescreen Presentation Laserdisc (and was included on the DVD)."
Wouldn't put it past him.
I was on a high school trip to Europe in Summer 1970 and was fortunate enough to catch 1776 at the New Theatre one night that August. I was late from dinner though, and got there right around Piddle Twiddle & Resolve. The acting was excellent and the (filled) balcony I sat in plus the rest of the audience was respectful of to enthusiastic about the show and its subject matter.
One note about that London recording which I have somewhere on cassette: the reprise of 'Til Then (not on the OCR) was included.
Markypoo, which reprise are you talking about? "Compliments"?
It makes you wonder...why do it in London? Then again why would Australia be remotely interested in this topic?

It's a great musical and I really enjoy the Lodon Recording.
Betty Buckley ruins it for me on the OBC, she sounds like a truck driver on steroids, god dammit that woman can't sing worth a god damned lick.
I dont see what all the hullabaloo is about doing the show in other countries, it's not like no one has ever heard of the US, and it's so-called humble beginnings.
While it's far from factual, I still love 1776, I think it captures a great spirit.
betty buckley has a killer voice...so you'd better watch ur mouth fenCHURCH- she just might come find u.

What is she gonna do? Come to my house and scream at me until I give in?
She has a grating, screeching, annoying voice, and she's a cun!y bitch to boot.
Nothing to like about her, sorry.
There is no beating William Daniels in this role, pure and simple. One of the great musical theatre performances.
hey, u never know. I wouldn't put it past her fenchurch.
