I haven't been a regular on here in a while, but these were posted only in the past few days, and I do't see a post on here.
MissPoochSmooch (who no doubt posts on here--and is related to te other Broadway youtuber poster MrPoochSmooch one would imagine) posted complete broadcasts of these awards. Some great stuff I hadn't seen before http://www.youtube.com/user/MissPoochSmooch/videos

Holy crap!!!
Jump to 30 min. in this 1968 Tony telecast, and you will see the three daughters from Fiddler On the Roof, including BETTE MIDDLER as Tzeitel singing "Matchmaker, Matchmaker."
Holy crap!!

Posted: 6/1/13 at 4:11amMore Holy Crap!!! I watched all those four shows with my parents. I was suddenly back in their living room. Thanks so much for the alert and the warm, fond memories (and the Virginia Slims commercials).

Oh, does that take me back to my adolescent days. I remember pleading with my Dad to let me watch the Tonys instead of our usual turning the channel to "Bonanza." Watching the '67 awards again, I am reminded how classy and elegant everyone was--and what short speeches. Barbara Harris, what a gem.
I vaguely remember watching the Tonys--in glorious black and white, of course--on local Channel 9 (WOR-TV) for a few years before the national telecasts began, if I remember correctly. Or was it just ceremony highlights on the Ch. 9 news? In any case, I doubt any of those videotapes/kinescopes are still around, unfortunately.
I could easily devote days to this site; unfortunately, I can't. Thanks so much for posting this!

A huge thank you to both Eric and the Pooches. I watched the 1967 and 1969 shows last night and got through an hour of the 1970 show before it froze on me (watching on the YouTube app of my new Smart TV).
Heading back in momentarily to hunt for '68 and '74. I am loving this, even if some of the musical numbers seem a little on the interminable side.

Posted: 6/2/13 at 3:25pmThank you! My brother-in-law was nominated for Best Supporting Actor in a Musical for Candide, and there he is, in the 1974 Tony Award Show, at 43 minutes into the program. I haven't seen Mark in years and years, and had forgotten what a cutie he was with all those curls!

The opening number of the 1970 telecast (Applause!) brought back a memory that I've kept even into adulthood.
I was in 6th grade, watching that number with my family. I will never forget the mixture of shock & titillation I felt when they got to the "Oklahoma!/Oh, Calcutta!" section. When the men started to disrobe, I started thinking, "Are they really gonna do this? Can this happen on television?" ...and then when they turned to expose their backsides... Christmas on a cracker!!!
Because of the poor quality of TV, there was no way for me to know if what I'd seen was real. Then I started wondering, "Can my parents tell how AMAZING I thought that was?" I was shocked, amazed, embarrassed and happy all at the same time.
To this day, that is my most memorable Tony moment and one I've recalled and re-imagined many times over the years. It was very nice to actually see it again!

Posted: 6/2/13 at 3:55pmThat number is on one of the Broadway's Lost Treasures DVD, but I've never been able to figure out if it was real or not. Surely on TV at the time, it wasn't...

Posted: 6/2/13 at 5:20pmThank you, Eric for bringing these over and MissPooch for giving us these wonderful telecasts! I just watched 1970 and was overwhelmed with memories. Good gravy! I had forgotten how handsome Ken Howard was!Looked even better than he did in "1776" movie with Blythe Danner. She looked lovely in this telecast, too, winning best featured actress for "Butterflies Are Free." I am going to have to watch all of these.

Posted: 6/2/13 at 5:34pmI just watched the '68 awards. Boy have times changed. The telecast had such class, dignity, simplicity, and respect and was full of true actors and major stars. Man was Paul Newman gorgeous.

Posted: 6/2/13 at 5:44pmIt's great to see such strong excerpts from the non musicals too--I know there's been a lot of issues on how to present plays (if presenting them at all...)but for me, this works.

But, oh God, that Coco excerpt was half-an-act long. It was interminable (except watching the goofy way KH walked around on stage.)
There were some brave choices there. Doing "Mama, Look Sharp" in the middle of the Vietnam War was okay on Broadway but brave for a television network.

Posted: 6/2/13 at 5:50pmI think on the Broadway's Lost Treasures DVD they say the Coco excerpt was the longest in history.

Ed Sullivan did a LOOOOOONG excerpt from "Do Re Mi" with two huge scenes and the full numbers "Waiting" and "Take a Job." Two minutes of either was better than all of the "Coco" blather.
BTW, both Bette Middler and Tommy Tune, in their acceptance speeches must have seemed like space aliens from some other galaxy to Nixon's America.
Good.
