The only thing I am glad about is how little I paid for the tickets-bought on TDF. I personally hated it. I spent a good amount of time with my eyes closed and covering my ears. Too bad it wasn't winter-I would have put earmuffs on!!! I would have left but I was with a friend.
What a tumultuous history for “1984” and its involvement with the Tonys.
It was deemed ineligible for Tony consideration allegedly because producer Scott Rudin would not allow Tony voter, Jose Antonio Vargas, to see the show (allegedly because of Rudin’s disdain for Vargas’s review of “The Social Network” in 2010. Link to review: https://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/747233).
As of April 12, the play once again became eligible for the Tonys because Vargas recused himself as a voter due to missing another production (Link: https://nyti.ms/2GTNEYy).
There is an entirely different thread for the initial reactions to the decision and controversy; therefore, I decided to bump this original previews thread to sort of jog my memory on the reactions of BW posters (I did not get to see the show).
This means Scott Rudin now has five shows in contention for Tonys this year: - Best Play: “1984” - Best Play: “Meteor Shower” - Revival of a Play: “The Iceman Cometh” - Revival of a Play: “Three Tall Women” - Revival of a Musical: “Carousel”
Could “1984” make it into any of the races or will it be completely shutout?
- Best Play - Lead Actor in a Play: Tom Sturridge (as ‘Winston’) - Featured Actor in a Play: Reed Birney (as ‘O’Brien’) - Featured Actor in a Play: Michael Potts (as ‘Charrington’) - Featured Actress in a Play: Olivia Wilde (as ‘Julia’) - Direction of a Play: Robert Icke & Duncan Macmillan - Costume Design in a Play: Chloe Lamford - Lighting Design in a Play: Natasha Chivers - Scenic Design in a Play: Chloe Lamford - Sound Design in a Play: Tom Gibbons

It's challenging to fairly critique and/or laud a play that is intentionally unpleasant to experience. I thought it was profound and deeply affecting, while also being almost entirely repulsive. Unfortunately, that's not a recipe for recommendation with most audiences.
I believe Best Play, Best Featured Actor (Reed Birney), Best Scenic Design, and/or Best Sound Design nominations would be fair.
