Is Mamma Mia a good show. I know it's pure fluf and I know I should go into the theatre expecting that and nothing else. I wanna see it and Ifeel like I should because I haven't done so yet.
Also, Is there a way to get a good cheap ticket for it. I know that the lowest price they offer is 60 for rear mezz and I kn ow TKTS wouldn't have it for much cheaper. I Wantrd to know if they offer something in the 30's or lower like the typical rush price. talkinbroadway.com sais that the show has suspended rush until further notice. Does anyone know why and have they brought it back?
Thanks

I would recommend knowing the Mamma Mia songs first. Look up a list of songs in the show on Amazon, and make sure you know them. I didn't know all of them the first time I saw the show and felt a bit disconnected during the show. After I heard the CD a million times, I saw it again and it enjoyed it more.
It's not a great show. You won't remember it in five years, but you'll have much fun as you are watching it.

Posted: 6/20/07 at 7:30pmI'd say go if you aren't able to get tickets to anything else. You're right, it is fluff. It's safe and fluffy, but it does have some funny moments. As long as you're prepared to pay whatever to see a 2 hour theme park show, you'll enjoy it. Definitly not something to see more than once though.

Posted: 6/20/07 at 7:33pmOne of the worst shows open right now. If you are a fan of ABBA, you will hate it because they butcher the music. Even Carolee can't save this piece of dreck.

The music has been re-orchestrated so it is not as saccharine as the original ABBA songs were. Carolee is indeed back and singing the role of Donna as well as any of the Donnas that I've seen/heard.
There's some major league talent in the pit - Ray Marchica (drums) and Paul Adamy (bass) also tackle Frank Zappa's music regularly as members of the Ed Palermo big band, not to mention Ray's mid-80s gig as drummer for Roy Buchanon. Jeff Campbell was Sting's lead guitarist for at least one of the Amnesty tours. They do a great job with the score.
It is certainly not a serious piece of theater, tackling none of the great questions of our existence. if' you're looking for existential soul searching, seek elsewhere. It is a fun bit of fluff, much less odious than many other shows I've been forced to sit through.

It's not a good show; however it is a fun show and enjoyable.
Mamma Mia has SRO when the shows are sold out, and I believe that is $20-25. I don't know how strict they are about when they sell SRO. I went on a Saturday matinee back in March and it looked like there was a SRO crowd. It might vary by week. The theater is more wide than long, so even if you are towards the back you aren't that far from the stage.

Posted: 6/20/07 at 8:37pmIt really depends on what kind of person you are, but I think that if you don't go in with exceedingly high expectations, you'll probably enjoy yourself. I generally dislike fun, fluffy musicals, but I thought MM! had a kind of infectious happiness to it that came from not taking itself too seriously as a show.

Posted: 6/20/07 at 8:46pmI've only seen the Vegas production but I think it's a good fun show that is not nomination material but definitely fun. I love ABBA music and I still liked the show. I suppose knowing their music and their style is a good thing to look up. Oh, and definitely don't pay full price, there are places to get discounts.
