I'm curious about how likely a transfer for it will be -- rising star, a director with a raved-about show on his hands... could happen. re: 2004 tony awards - taboo

Well, while Esparza's star may be rising among message board fans, he's still an unknown 99% of America. Every show he's done has flopped so far (I'm not counting his replacement stint in Cabaret) and he's not box office draw. Not sure producers will be lining up to pony up millions for yet another COMPANY revival so soon after the last one flopped, especially in light of the mediocre box office numbers for Doyle's current SWEENEY TODD. I doubt even Roundabout would be interested considering they produced the last flop revival of COMPANY just ten years ago (not to mention their theatres are already booked through summer).

Well, see how the reviews are, but I'm betting that anyone who wants to see Esparza as Bobby better be planning on buying a plane ticket to Cincinnati.

And if you want to talk about a show getting robbed for Best Score, how about "Sunday in the Park With George" losing to "La Cage Aux Folles"?

I meant on the theatre scene. re: 2004 tony awards - taboo It's annoylingly ironic that he's been tied to so many flops, critical darling that he is.

To Cincinatti I go.

Raul was definitely robbed... I also love love love the cast recording for Taboo. So many beautiful songs, it really is a shame the show didn't win for best score.

He never fails to bring a smile to my face. re: 2004 tony awards - taboo

I think Raul should have won, as well, even though I saw none of the nominees. I'm biased, I guess. :-P

Yeah, but what defines a "big fat flop"? It had a huge fanbase, and if a "flop" means it didn't do well at the box office, then I guess you can call it that, but this show has legendary status in many parts of the theater community and always will. One Tony win, that's all. Just recognition. It could have taken score or Raul (or both) easily and deservedly. Just to spit in the faces of all those critics and gossip queen Michael Reidel. Well, I hope George knows how much we love him and the gorgeous music he wrote for this show.

Rosie was a flop. Taboo was a hit.

Thanks for posting that picture, Emcee. re: 2004 tony awards - taboo

I just want to see Mr. Esparza in something that's successful. Especially since he's been the most raved-about thing in many of the projects he's been involved in. If Company can't be a success regardless of how well-done the production is, maybe it's better that it doesn't transfer.

Unfortunately, Cincinnati is even further away for me than NYC! Argh.

Personally best score should have gone to Caroline as well as best actress though i do love idina. I also think that Denis O'HAre should have won featured actor.

Taboo was a "hit" amongst the fans who loved it. It had a LOYAL fanbase, but huge? Hello? In no other way was that show a hit. You can't tell me that thing didn't flop tremendously on financial grounds.

re: 2004 tony awards - taboo

I think the press and media treatment of Taboo in NY (before and after it opened) guarantees that Mr O'Dowds' pen will never go near another musical score.
