2004 Tony Awards - Taboo

Hey all, ya know I'm sitting here and listening to the Taboo OBCR, and ya know, I'm in a bit of a selfish mood, and I totally think Taboo should have taken Best Score, Best Leading Actor (Euan) and Best Featured Actor (Raul). I'm sorry and don't get me wrong, I was and still am thrilled that Avenue Q got all the much deserved accolades it did, but man, this score (Taboo's) is so gorgeous. And Euan is heartbreaking, and Raul is just lovely. I know it was seen as impossible for anyone to beat out Hugh Jackman that year and if it was going to be anyone, it would have been John Tartaglia, but I wouldn't have minded an upset having Euan walk away a winner, give him a kick-start to a great career. And Featured Actor really could have gone to anyone that year. I mean, yeah Michael Cerveris was great in Assassins, but he would've been fine as a simple nominee. The score, Euan and Raul are the three parts of Taboo that shine and I wish they had the opportunity to get recognition. Boy George got totally dissed left and right that year, and he wrote a damn gorgeous score, and it deserved more. Assassins was already winning Best Revival and Best Director. And Avenue Q still could have won Best Musical. I want to see Euan back on Broadway lighting up the stage, and I want to see Raul back in a challenging dramatic role. Sorry for the venting, but it was just on my mind.

Raul should have won that year and he should also have been nominated for Chitty Chitty.

re: 2004 Tony Awards - Taboo

yes, Raul should have absolutely have won in my opinion. Though i too would have loved to see Euan go home with the Tony but with Hugh Jackman in the category, it was hard for anyone else to get the glory. But yes I happened to be there and it would have been amazing to see Raul win, and Euan, and George for that matter. But as George said, it was so amazing that they got nominated! But ah Taboo how i miss thee!

Having seen ALL of that year's contenders, NOT ONE deserved the award more than Hugh Jackman (the other nominees were throwaways in roles that really weren't spectacular).

re: 2004 Tony Awards - Taboo

Right, from what I've heard of all the candidates, Hugh deserved it the most. While he may not have been the best, he kept that show running. He WAS the show.

Taboo should have won best score. I love Avenue Q, but the score from Taboo was just spectacular

Yay for Raul love!

Yep. Still mad.

George should've won for the score. I'm willing to conceded that Cerveris was totally deserving of the Tony, but sometimes I still have days where I think "you stole Raul's Tony. Give it back." I love Euan, but he didn't have a shot.

Hugh was amazing and deserving the person who was most overlooked in 2004 was Isabell Keating for featured Actress....she WAS Judy Garland when she stepped on that stage

I don't think we've seen the last of Euan on Broadway. In the meantime, he's got a gig coming up, and a show at The Public and The New Victory and a CD coming out!

I was upset when Hugh Jackman won for Best Actor however I was frickin' pissed when Raul didn't win. While I didn't get a chance to see either Assassins or Taboo, if you listen to Raul on the OBCR and then Michael on the Assassins OBCR, Raul's delivery is so much more powerful than Michael's (no offense to him though).

As far as best score is concerned, I love Taboo's over Avenue Q's but I think it really should've gone to Caroline, or Change.

re: 2004 Tony Awards - Taboo

Hugh Jackman and Avenue Q both in my opinion deserved their awards. I do really like the score for Taboo and like several of the songs a lot. I think it's too bad they opened it on Broadway, it may have done better off or off-off Broadway. It's just not the kind of show that really plays on Broadway.

Raul was very... over-the-top and in-your-face with his performance -- the former of which I don't think is something Cerveris' performance would've worked as. Raul's role was one hell of a kooky fellow.

The score was severely overlooked. Avenue Q's LYRICS are genius, but IMO, the music itself is kind of bland.

I'm big of Avenue Q and I have to agree with that. The actual music isn't the best part of the show.

I know it's supposed to be reminiscent of Sesame Street and all, but... that's a virtue and a flaw, IMO. It's funny as all hell, and it's catchy, but... I don't think it's Tony-deserving composition.

I LOVE the score for Taboo. And, I ADORE Avenue Q and am so happy those boys won.

But, the award should have gone to Caroline, Or Change, which was one of the most prolific musicals of the last decade or more.

I think they figure that raul is just starting his broadway career and will have many more chances to win a tony. I think micheal said something to that effect in his acception speech.
And i totally agree with everyone about winning best score, everytime i listen to the cd i ask, y did this show close.

Just starting? er. okay. But it's not like Michael is 20 years older than Raul.

Anyway, in his speech, Michael addressed his fellow nominees, and said something to Raul, "who will be up here any day now," or something.

re: 2004 tony awards - taboo

I LOVE the score to Taboo, it's absolutely gorgeous. I suppose "Best Score" includes both music and lyrics, which is why Avenue Q won, but it's hard not to feel that George got slighted on that one. (It's a shame that the book of this show had to be so dreadful.)

And it would've been great if Raul had won for playing Philip Sallon, but hopefully he'll have his day. Company revival transfer to Broadway, anyone? Here's hoping.

re: 2004 tony awards - taboo

As much as we'd like to see him, I think it's too soon for a revival of Company.
