Are there favorites besides Coast of Utopia? I haven't kept track of which plays are new this year and which are revivals (they all seem to be the latter, to me...).

THE COAST OF UTOPIA
CORAM BOY
DEUCE
FROST/NIXON
THE LITTLE DOG LAUGHED
LOSING LOUIE
RADIO GOLF
THE VERTICAL HOUR
THE YEAR OF MAGICAL THINKING
I think the nominations will be:
THE COAST OF UTOPIA
CORAM BOY
FROST/NIXON
Then either RADIO GOLF or THE LITTLE DOG LAUGHED

Posted: 3/12/07 at 3:00pmNot necessarily. It will probably be ruled a revival because of subsequent regional productions and the film version that was made. Same thing happened with SIGHT UNSEEN, RECKLESS, LITTLE SHOP, etc.

Someone may want to inform the Internet Broadway Database where TALK RADIO is listed as an original play and not a revival.

The five nominees will be
Coast of Utopia
The Little Dog Laughed
Frost Nixon
Deuce (or Radio Golf)
And Coast of Utopia will win, unless Deuce is hailed as a triumph (which could happen). However, I think Angela Lansbury may get her fifth (My God) Tony instead of the show winning Best Play. I think the nominees for performances in plays this year will be far more interesting than those for Best Play.

The Tony rules have nothing to do with IBDB. IBDB classifies any play that has never had a prior Broadway production as "new," but for the Tonys, under the "classics" rule, TALK RADIO is a revival.
I'm guessing the nods will go to:
The Coast of Utopia
Frost/Nixon
Coram Boy
Radio Golf

Posted: 3/12/07 at 3:32pmHate to bring this up, but why and how was Assassins considered a classic? I mean, I knew it, I loved it. But everyone else didn't. It didn't run nearly as long as something like Little Shop of Horrors or even Talk Radio. It wasn't being performed constantly in stock and may I say it was a helluva lot better than most of the nominees for Best Musical that year.

Assassins was voted as a revival rather than a new musical under the classics rule by a very close vote of the Tony Administration Committee (10 to 9 as I recall). The justification was that it had a major New York production at Playwrights (that was preserved with a cast album by a major name cast) and had had a couple of hundred productions around the country during the prior decade (by colleges, amateur and professional groups) and had basically already entered the canon of musical theatre at that point.

Margo, when are you putting out your Broadway Encyclopedia? Can I get on a wait list?
