After hearing about Big Fish starting previews, I decided to check out a list of what musicals are coming this season, and it's gonna be a doozy. There's potential for some incredible shows in here, and I think it's probably the most musicals that have opened in one season in quite a while. Plus some heavy hitters when it comes to music! (Alan Menken, Jason Robert Brown, Kitt & Yorkey, Ahrens & Flaherty, Andrew Lippa) Here's a list I compiled of everything with an official date and theatre:

First Date
Soul Doctor
Big Fish
A Night With Janis Joplin
After Midnight
A Gentleman's Guide To Love and Murder
Beautiful
The Bridges of Madison County
Rocky
Aladdin
If/Then
Bullets Over Broadway

Plus, rumored shows like The Bodyguard, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and the 2pac musical. Also, the only official revivals are Les Miserables, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, and Cabaret. One is a a tour with a new cast and another is a rehash of a previous revival. I hope My Fair Lady can announce an opening!

What do y'all think? It's refreshing to see the American musical is so alive.

I think there is the potential for some good ones on that list, but I'm not so optimistic about others.

First Date was weak and Soul Doctor a mess.

Janis Joplin and Beautiful are jukebox musicals and Bullets over Broadway doesn't have an original score. After Midnight is basically a revue; not to say it won't be a good revue, but it's not original music.

Big Fish was good and showed much promise at the first preview.

Gentleman's Guide, Bridges of Madison County and If/Then all hold the most promise for me in terms of score potential.

Of the 12 shows on your list only 6 of them have original scores (I'm counting Rocky in that 6, but doesn't it have a few pop songs thrown in their from the movies?). That is sad for me...

Marie: Don't be in such a hurry about that pretty little chippy in Frisco. Tony: Eh, she's a no chip!

To me, there's a couple promising ones but overall it seems like an extremely weak season. Updated On: 9/6/13 at 01:50 AM

Pretty disappointing compared to last season IMO.

It may be premature to call this season weak. Last season was a good one but the previous few years haven't been exactly great. Of the shows on the list, I can only speak about Gentleman's Guide. Saw it in San Diego and it is very good.
