Just for the record... a one-night broadcast of a musical, whether it attracts 18 million viewers or 9 million viewers, would never be favored by broadcast corporations over a season of NFL. Yes, it's expensive to broadcast and produce the football programming but the revenue they bring in from airing it is astronomical and far outweighs the cost. That being said, I would definitely agree with you that this talk of its demise is greatly premature. We'll know either way within the next month or two.
Also, a note about THE WIZARD OF OZ since that keeps coming up. Warner Brothers has two major projects, based on the OZ property, coming down the pipeline. They will be announced at some point in 2015 and I have to wonder if that eliminates its availability from WB to NBC.
Grey Gardens with the red hot Jessica Lange as Big Edie and Taylor Swift as young Edie in Act one. Get Ebersole for Act One Big Edie and Act 2 Little Edie.
Liza - No one is arguing that having the rights to football would be what any broadcaster would likely prefer over producing a live musical.
And you're right, that the revenues are higher for football. My point is that the margin on this production may actually be higher. Sports rights are inordinately expensive, so even if there are tons of advertisers for every game, the cost for the privilege to show it is a high bar initially.
