#025th Annual Putnam Spelling Bee vs. the real Spelling Bee

I am currently watching the spelling bee on TV... and I am amazed at how dead on the creaters of "The 25th Annual Putnam Spelling Bee" were. Before this, I had never seen a real spelling bee and I am laughing because I keep on the thinking of the musical and how much I am reminded of this.
Anyone else share the same opinion?

Posted: 6/8/06 at 9:46amIn the county spelling bee I competed in last January [shut up, it was my last one], I was amazed how many of the kids could BE characters in the show - one boy did the Logainne "arm writing" and then corrected the host on the pronounciation of his name after he was named the winner. It was uncanny.

Posted: 6/8/06 at 10:17amI would do the same thing, if I see words visualized, I can spell much better. I've never been in a spelling bee, besides those ones that your whole class did in elementary school, but I would definitely write it on my arm first before speaking it out loud!

Wow .. no need to be rude liotte .. if you don't like the thread than don't comment at all.
Of course, I knew where they got the idea from, but I did not know to what extent. i.e. The girl who writes on her arm to "visualize" the word first ... i had no idea that people actually did stuff like that.

Don't know if this has been mentioned before, but anyone who is enjoying the similarities between the real bee and the show should definitely check out the wonderful documentary "Spellbound." It has a lot of the same humor and drama as the show, and you'll definitely recognize a few character types.
EDIT: Sorry, I'm still kind of new here. Just did a search, and I see that I was preaching to the choir on that one.

I like the musical when she fingerspells. That'd be the way I'd do it.

Thanks for clearing that up liotte. Written word can sometimes come out a way that people don't mean it. Sorry to think you were being rude.

I love how Leaf does it, it's hilarious. I think it'd be funny if someone actually did something like that.
There was one boy in the real bee that was yelling the words and he was kind of strange as well.
