As for your question...I personally think FSS has a great score. It's not a BOOK show, the dialouge is quite cheezy, but the music is wonderful (especially with dances...songs like the audition, we're in the money and the title song, can be quite amazing)...
HOWEVER
I think it should be a law from Tams-Whitmark that no school can perform 42nd Street.....why? I can't tell you how many HS productions (and one middle school) that have butchered this show. I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE this show....
It would be like me asking Mary Sunshine's pre-school to try to do a full scale production of Les Mis....Some productions just shouldn't be done unless you've got the A) Reputation B) Money to invest C) Talent

Posted: 8/31/05 at 5:43pmWell i'm not quite sure whay we are doing it altough we do have many talented people. I am sorry to hear you have seen it butchered but some schools, such as mine, feel like it is a good musical to do. But thanks.

Don't listen to that nonsense, XO. Of course the ideal situation for ANY show is money and talent though i'm not sure what reputation has to do with anything.
It's a big audience pleaser, lots of fun dance numbers, and nobody need be Daniel Day-Lewis to pull off most of the roles. You'll recognize alot of the songs I'm sure.
And the last thing Tams-Witmark should do is discourage people from performing certain shows because they don't have money for million-dollar sets or a cast of Broadway pros...I would imagine that the majority of royalties come from schools and community theatres and not professional companies.

Posted: 8/31/05 at 6:01pmi guess i can see your point. I know it won't be half as good as a professional version but we'll try our best.

I saw 42nd street done by San Diego Junior theater. And it was great for a production of all kids.
So it is possible.
And it's an amazing show overall. The score is amazing, so classic. Good Luck!

Posted: 8/31/05 at 6:32pmI am not a huge fan of the show myself, but I have seen some local productions of it and it can be pulled off quite well with a High Scool cast as long as the effort is there, and you have a Choreographer who choreographs to the skill level of the cast.

Posted: 8/31/05 at 7:22pmAs for the show, XO, get the original cast CD. (DON'T use the revival as it is different from the version sent out for community theatre groups) The origianl version on RCA has a detailed synopsis in the booklet.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

Posted: 9/1/05 at 2:41pmi really enjoy the music of 42nd street. They did it in my high school a few years back and, although no one knew how to tap before the show, they managed to pull it off beautifully.
