I'm assuming most if not all shows are dark on the 4th?
If that's the case, is it ok to see the fireworks from anywhere in the TimesSquare area or do you have to camp out near one of the bridges?

I do believe that the only Broadway shows that have performances on July 4th are Harry Potter and Grey House.
In regard to viewing the fireworks, you need to get closer to the East River. This is the link for the official viewing areas for the fireworks.
