It would help to know what sort of place you are looking for. If its a diner or a sandwich place, there is a diner at 2nd/58 and (I think) still at least one on 57. I prefer the one on 58 but it's been a while. On 60th, there are some sandwich places as well as 2-3 quite nice restaurants. (I don't have the names but they are mostly toward Madison.) Below 3rd on 58/59/60, there are some decent places, including a bar called (I think) Bloom's Tavern. A greek place at 3rd and 60, a Patsys that is a not very good representation of what the original was. I hope that free associating helps.

I don't really understand the disinclination to make reservations, especially at a busy time. Forget about standing around waiting, nothing wastes time like wandering around hungry looking for a place with a table for you. Not to mention that places with plenty of tables usually have them for a reason.

But as always, to each their own.
