I have a good friend who was in that production of Sunday and he said it was one of the most amazing artistic experiences of his life and everyone else's lives who were in the show. He told me about the first run-through. Everyone was there including James Lapine and Sondheim. No one had heard Jenna Russell sing "Move On" yet and by the end of it Ed said he was bawling. He looked around and everyone was crying including Lapine and Sondheim! My mother attended the show with me. She saw the original production in 1984 and said that the revival was by far much, much better. We both saw the London showing of this production and this was much tighter, looked better, and every member of the cast was sooo much stronger than the cast in London. It was like a totally different show.

I haven't seen South Pacific but I think Sunday should have won Best Revival. It was so amazing on so many levels. It seems to be the fate of this show, as wonderful and moving as it is, to always be an artistic and public success but left out when awards are given out. It DID win the Pulitzer so I guess it had the last laugh. There really is some truth in the phrase "art isn't easy."

it was a transfer from london and only scheduled to run for a limited time. No tour was ever planned. Interestingly, it has never gone on a tour. Despite being a brilliant, moving show, it is very esoteric (sp?) and I suspect would be a hard sell in many midwestern cities.

Actually apparently it was going to tour but was cancelled because projections couldn't work on the road. (That is, little accommodation from theatres)

Give me claws and a hunch, just away from this bunch.
