7000th Performance of Phantom of the Opera

Just got back from the Majestic. I had won tickets to see Phantom at the BC/EFA Flea Market back in September and finally got to see it tonight. What an awesome show! Hugh Panaro, Julie Hanson and John Cudia were all great! There was an announcement before the show saying how Phantom had opened on January 26, 1988 and the company invited us to join them in celebrating the 7000th performance on Broadway.
After the show, Hugh Panaro gave a little speech about the historical mark and then went into speaking about Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and fundraising.
All in all, it was a great show...just thought I'd share!

Posted: 11/8/04 at 11:22pmI should see it again, it's been 10 years. Sadly, this show would not be open if it weren't for all the Asian tourists.

Posted: 11/8/04 at 11:27pmI do. I walk past if every night of my life (except Mondays,) and I have several friends in the theatre. That work there - some actually on the show, some in the house - and they say atleast 40% of the audience every night are tourists from an asian country. You can't deny it. Just like 89% of Louis Vuitton's profits are from Asians. It's true.

Yep, I'm sure it's true. I'm Asian (-Canadian, but still) and I've seen Phantom 3 times and own several LV items.
Sad, I know. But I AM a good driver, dammit! And I DON'T like Hello Kitty!
Either way - I'm sure a lot of long-running spectacle shows (i.e. Les Mis, Miss Saigon) get a high number of Asian tourists. We want a lot of bang for our buck. But not enough to see Wicked.

Posted: 11/8/04 at 11:40pmI'm not racist. God bless 'em for keeping the show running. I was just making an observation.

I don't think it's racist if you make a stastical fact or observation. If 40% of the typical Phantom audience is Asian, then 40% of the typical Phantom audience is Asian.
Now, if Munku said, "Phantom sucks, and naturally all those goddamn Asians are the ones keeping it running.", I'd be at him with Chinese water torture as we speak.

Glad you enjoyed the show! Hugh Panaro is the best Phantom I've ever seen.
