Nine-show weeks were pretty common when I worked a subscription house in Florida. Another show was coming in the following week (and the current show usually had another engagement), so there was no extending into the future. Instead, for big hits we'd schedule a 9th show and pay the appropriate penalty.

FWIW, the recently closed FABULOUS PALM SPRINGS FOLLIES did as many as 10, three-and-a-half hour shows per week during high season. And the performers ranged from 56 to late 80s! But they followed one cardinal rule: the cast always had two, consecutive days off per week, regardless of the demand for tickets.
