I know the Broadway musical flopped, but I've always had a lot of affection for it and, in my opinion, it was under-appreciated. Does anyone else think it would make a great movie? My dream cast (and one I think would sell a lot of tickets) would be:
Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Violet Newstead
Anne Hathaway as Judy Bernly
Carrie Underwood as Doralee Rhodes
Alec Baldwin as Franklin Hart, Jr.
Melissa McCarthy as Roz Keith
Jason Sudeikis as Joe
Molly Shannon as Margaret
Thoughts?

Posted: 6/9/12 at 10:22pmI don't know if there would be a real market for this. I love your suggestions though, except for maybe Carrie Underwood. I just don't see her being a terrific actress, but most of the cast is great.

Posted: 6/9/12 at 11:17pmI only saw the version that went on tour and felt it treated the show like a Dollywood attraction rather than legitimate musical theater. That said, I do get a kick out of the score and absolutely LOVE the original film. I'd be curious to see who'd approach the musical on film.

This could work.
Kristin Chenoweth for Doralee!
I like the Molly Shannon suggestion, but more for Roz. Margaret isn't a big enough role for her.
Alec Baldwin is an interesting choice...maybe Victor Garber?
For Violet I agree with Julia Louis-Dreyfus
And for Judy....Debra Messing. That would be wonderful.
