re: 9 to 5 Tony Placement

How is it a disservice to Allison at all? The girls are all top-billed, all have VERY prominent roles, and work together a lot throughotu the show. They always give interviews together, they're all in the promo shots...if anything, it's an insult to the OTHER two to only push Allison lead.

I feel bad for Kathy Fitzgerald - she gave a great featured performance but her nomination will probably be bumped for one of the three girls.

I'm sorry, but I think peoples' preconceptions are making them very biased toward Megan and Stephanie. Speaking as someone with NO prior attachment to either girl, I can say that there is no way to consider them leads.

Kelly2, that is a very good point you made about preconceptions. =)Full disclosure: I saw Stephanie's last show as Elphaba for my first Broadway show and it certainly made a lasting impression. However, I think the same point applies to Allison. After all, she is a well-known and respected Hollywood actress. If anything, I think most people would automatically consider her a lead. This isn't to say that she isn't- she clearly is a lead. But if there are other worthy performances for the leading and featured categories, then they should be considered. I think this cast is so strong, it's not a simple decision, and someone's bound to be left out...

PiraguaGuy2, I completely agree with you about Kathy Fitzgerald. "Heart to Hart" was fantastic!

Well, maybe both Stephanie and Allison will get lead nominations at the Tony's, they did it for Wicked only a few years ago.

Regarding Best Score-
Can a score with perfect rhymes in every quatrain please win this year? The past two years' winners have had rather unfortunate lyrics.

re: 9 to 5 Tony Placement

Now ive only seen a naughty DVD of 9 to 5s out of town try out (very good copy though) just wanted to get that out up front.

It has to win set design, i was pretty blown away in the song 9 to 5 at the opening when the office set came in, it was brilliant.

All 3 women were perfect but in terms of awards recognition it will be between SB and AJ in the lead roles category. Block has my fave song in the show (I think its called Get Out and Stay Out) and she brings the house down with it.

Score wise, in my opinion it was OK but not great, it has some knockout songs in there (9 to 5, Get Out Stay Out, Shine Like The Sun) but also many fillers.

The book is pretty strong for what it is.

All in all its a very good show but slightly let down by the score
Namo i love u but we get it already....you don't like Madonna

re: 9 to 5 Tony Placement

I just don't know why anyone would WANT Stephanie in leading. She'd have a very good shot of actually WINNING featured, but I can't imagine her winning leading over Allison. Hopefully, the show will be smart and separate the two of them, because they BOTH give fantastic performances that could be award-winning, but they shouldn't compete against each other!

re: 9 to 5 Tony Placement

The original casting call had all three women + Franklin Hart as leads. Of course, Violet was also supposed to be a comic coloratura with a strong voice, and Janney is definitely an alto....

For some reason, the "line of demarcation" seems much clearer between the roles of Judy and Doralee than between those of Violet and Judy. I'd have said the role of Roz is definitely "featured."

re: 9 to 5 Tony Placement

If Roz has enough of a part for a Tony nod, where can I start campaigning for Andy Karl to get a featured nod for his adorable and heart-warming turn as Joe?

re: 9 to 5 Tony Placement

People brought up how Allison is known in Hollywood.
Winning a Tony award and having Hollywood brought up defeats the purpose of the Tonys, it shouldn't make any difference.

That said Stephanie has more vocal parts and it is, after all a musical. If she does sing more, and gives amazing performances, like she always does, I don't see why she shouldn't be nominated for a lead.

re: 9 to 5 Tony Placement

Andy Karl's Joe IS adorable and heartwarming, but he doesn't even have a single scene to himself, much less a big number like "Heart to Hart." In fact, I think the only time he sings is during "Let Love Grow," which is a duet with Allison (and was, unfortunately, one of the more boring parts of the show, in my opinion. He's MUCH better than the part they've written for him).

Oi. Because she won't win in lead. She won't beat Allison, who she would be nominated against, because there's no way they'll put Allison in featured. I think Stephanie would rather have a shot at winning in featured than lose lead.

Yeah, yeah, great. Just please, can this year's Best Score have perfect rhymes? I mean, after Spring Awakening and In the Heights, I wouldn't care if a couplet went "The sky is blue and I love you." Really.

re: 9 to 5 Tony Placement

Let's just wait and see what they do. All this bickering is ridiculous.
#42

re: 9 to 5 Tony Placement

I don't think anyone was bickering (keeping in mind what I've seen on this board). People are just asking questions and having a discussion. It's true what you say that we won't know until they make their decision, but its still an interesting topic to try and imagine the behind-the-scenes thinking on this.

I forgot to mention that imho the costumes are also excellent and might at least be nominated.

I was wondering, is the featured category like supporting in other award shows? Is there a major difference? It's been so long since I've seen the Tony's that I can't remember. =P
