Posted: 3/29/08 at 11:49pmI haven't seen the show yet (going on first Saturday in May), but when I was in Sardi's today, the word of mouth was discouraging. I'll wait to see for myself, but it seems a lot of people are down on the show. One of the most-repeated complaints was regarding the score -- everyone was talking about how there weren't any real "songs" in it. And it seems pretty unanimous that Matt Cavanaugh is wasted (by that, I mean under-utilized). Oh, well, got to wait and see.

There weren't any "real" songs? What in the hickens does that mean?
I would say "Immediate Family" was pretty real. As was, "Don't Ever Stop Saying I Love You", "I Stayed", "Coney Island", and "Partners".
And I disagree with everybody who says that the score is not memorable. I saw that show in October and remember the songs perfectly.

Posted: 3/30/08 at 12:30amI agree with you 100% on this one. It is a musical with the feel of a play. Each time I saw it there were AT LEAST 7 or 8 people within the my row and the row behind me, in tears. It really was just so beautiful and moving and Faith Prince gives a heartbreaking and haunting performance.

Posted: 3/30/08 at 2:30amI saw the show last night and loved it. I know what people are saying about the music. I thought the orchestra needed to be much bigger and I honestly didn't LOVE the orchestrations, but I did enjoy the music immensely. I think it's a truly wonderful show! Go see it!!

I really think Faith will win it. After the Drama Desk Awards it should be easier to tell. Leading Actress is the shows best shot at winning (maybe Book) and I believe that is where the Tony voters acknowledge and reward the show. Gypsy get that with their AMAZING featured actress.

"everyone was talking about how there weren't any real "songs" in it."
Wasn't that also said about CAROLINE, OR CHANGE? Who are these people, and what do they know?

Faith Prince gives a Tony-worthy performance, without question.
I can't wait to see this again.

Last year I mentioned the "likability" factor in the voting and we all know wha happened to a particular "unliked" actor.
Two of the musical actress front rummers (in different categories) have that same problem this year.
It will be an interesting contest once again.

I can't wait to see Zbornick! She is hysterical. You should have seen her one woman show at the Metropolitan Room. One of the zaniest shows I have ever seen.
Counting the days till I see this.
PS Matt is one of the nicest people I have ever met. His girlfriend is a lucky woman.

jerby I agree......if people are expecting a happy 'My Fair Lady" type of musical, they will not like Catered......if they want a rock RENT type musical with a message, they will not like it, and if they want something Disneyfied......they definately will not like it.
But if they like a musical which makes you think, which make you deal with emotions and family relationships, which makes you think about putting someone elses needs above your own, they'll like it.
No, it's not music you'll hum or whistle to in the shower.....but it is a musical whose emotions and issues everyone can relate to.......

I have the songs in my head. But granted I have heard them multiple times.
Such a beautiful show. And a fantastic company of people.
