This may seem like a stupid question, but why do they require form fitting dance clothes? And no leg warmers?

to see your body and the way each part of you moves. if you wear a sweatpants you might be hiding what your legs are really doing.
Really? Thank you for the answer! That's interesting. So what do dancers usually wear to auditions such as this?
Yes, that is so interesting that they'd want to see what you look like in tights for a show in which the cast spends the entire evening standing on the stage in tights. Please share some other mysterious secrets of sheaux business!
i would love to be at that audition with all those hot latin male dancers in their form fitting dance outfits!
yum!

That's weird. This is a show where you have to know how to dance. You can't fake it like they did in the movie.
What does ethnicity have to do with dancing?
please let's not bring up the movie...the movie has nothing to do with this...

It is an open call for DANCERS yet it says "we encourage SINGERS".

And it says it in capital letters. Almost like they prefer singers over dancers. You think Marvin Hamlisch wrote in a Vocal Minority like Sondheim did for Company?
At least we know the production is still going on.
Maybe they would prefer Singers who can dance opposed to dancers who can sing?
They are probably looking for the 'pit singers' who sing in the booth off stage. Besides, everyone has to sing well to be on that line!
And as far as ethnicity is goes. The parts are pretty set ethnically though I suppose they could be open to interpretation with the exception of Diana, Richie and Paul.
They encourage singers and emphasize it... because far too many dancers out there really can't sing. A sad truth. These characters need to SING and dance. The movie talent was lacking in singing ability, with only a couple of exceptions. The rest were terrible singers. They probably learned a hard lesson from that. "Getting by" as a singer isn't good enough for this show.
The only one who can't sing is Kristine. It's part her role and "song."
The rest better be able to deliver the goods, at least as much as the OBC did.

And Connie. Unless they have someone rewrite the Asian jokes.
There is an alternate Connie role. Her name is Connie "Mac or Mc something" from Greensboro, NC if I recall correctly. There are several alternate lines written throughout the script.

There are alternate lines for Connie in case she is not asian, though I would think they would want to get as close to what is written in the original book as possible.
They will! Especially since Bob and Baayork are working on it.
Yeah, over Baayork's dead body will they mess with Connie.
All those lines about her being 5 years old in "The King & I" are true. She was the littlest princess that comes forward at the end in the OBC.
Go, girl.
