I miss the wah-wah guitar, and organ as well. Tunick certainly gave it a more streamlined, typical Broadway sound in the new orchestrations. I wonder if any of it was a question of budget--using more typical instruments (I know that there was a lot of talk about with Company, being unable to ever quite get right the wonderful, 1970s, synth sound they have simply because those instruments haven't really survived, and no electronic synth patch quite gets the sound right). Hamlisch, somewhere (the liner notes?) praises Tunick's new What I Did for Love orchestrations (notably in the opening of the song) for making it now sound like like a pop song and more like a show tune. Hrmm.

That's actually a really interesting point, now that we are getting to the point in history where some of the original orchestrations for shows relied on certain synthesizers for their sound. I would imagine we'll start hearing more and more of those sounding different, even when they do use the original charts, just because the sounds produced by the machines change with the technology, or just isn't even available anymore at all.
