Oh my I hadn't heard! As always this board covers the really important news.
I always wanted to see her, but now I never will. Ah well, may she rest!

Posted: 7/31/05 at 3:02pmIf you have the Decca Broadway CD reissue of the 1943 revival cast of A CONNECTICUT YANKEE, you have among the bonus tracks 4 songs from BY JUPITER recorded by Hildegarde in 1942. The four selections are "Carless Rhapsody", "Jupiter Forbid", "Nobody's Heart" and the wonderful "Everything I've Got." This wasn't a cast recording - just a mini album (2 78 RPM records) of 4 songs from teh show sung by Hildegarde. Check it out!
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

I loved this woman! Each show a masterclass in how to do it! Also loved her shows with the late Bill Wright. I met her thru a dear friend, who used to have her over for movies. Talk about energetic. I don't know where she got it all from.
I just came fr visiting my friend at the Actors' Fund Home in Englewood & had to break the news to him. Very sad.
I have Hildegarde's 2nd autobio somewhere. I also have a copy of the song Vernon Duke wrote for her when they were in Paris in his own handwriting.
I hope there's going to be an appropriate tribute. Click on the link for the NYT Obit.

Posted: 8/1/05 at 1:41amIt just goes to show you that spending a lifetime in nightclubs and saloons is healthier than running off to the gym every afternoon. Just a hunch, but I'll bet she never ran a marathon either. Hildegarde was the last of her kind. May she rest in peace

Posted: 8/1/05 at 1:46amShe was truly one-of-a-kind. There was never anyone like her and will never be again. I know she was really old, but somehow I just felt "happier" knowing she was still around. Sad.

Posted: 8/1/05 at 2:35pmHmmm...I just read her obit in the New York Times and was glad they mentioned her partner of 25 years, Anna Sosenko (songwriter of her theme song "Darling, Je Vous Aime Beaucoup") however I found it odd that the L.A. Times obituary was almost a word for word reprint minus any mention of Sosenko's personal involvement. Why the ommision when discussing someone's personal life in regards to such an important element...one's extremely longterm partner? Get with it L.A. Times!

Posted: 8/1/05 at 3:14pmI was reading somewhere that Hildegarde toured with the national company of "Follies". I was unaware that "Follies" had a national tour - does anyone know what role she played?

Hildegarde played Solange laFitte ("Ah, Paris!"). I was fascinated because it's a production you almost never hear anything about.
