Maybe I'm blind, but I've never seen the "subtextual love triangle." I can understand how people might get that from Grantaire, but not between Enjolras and Marius.

Ohhh, the Les Miz Fan Fiction Index. Now THAT brings back some memories :)
To answer the question at hand:
musical - Eponine
book - Enjolras, Cosette, and all of les amis. Especially Combeferre and Courfeyrac.
Back in my Le Cafe days that subextual love triangle was talked about to death, ah the memories.
As for favorite character...I always had a soft spot for Joly though he does next to nothing in the musical.
Bamatabois is a very underappreciated character. He wears a gorgeous suit even when trolling for hookers, he doesn't take any crap from that Fantine lady, he's tight with Javert, and he gets to be Grantaire later on as well as understudy Javert (traditionally, not sure if it's different in the new production)

It is different. Drew doesn't play Bambi -- Daniel Bogart does.
Le Cafe brings back some memories as well.
*sigh* to be in middle school and involved in Les Miz online fandom.

Eponine is my favorite character, I appreicate the depth of the character even in the musical(if done well). Of course, I also like her songs.

Enjolras.
Eponine and Enjolras hands down. Both in the musical and the book
Of course who doesn't love Jean Valjean if they are LES MIZ fan?
As for me, I see that Grantaire loves Enjolras. Enjolras cares for Marius as a brother and vice versa, but there is no "triangle."
Re: Enjolras: He has no clue about or desire for romantic love- of any kind- nor does he notice it when it thrown his way (from Grantaire.) One might even wonder, despite all his passionate feelings for the revolution, equality and freedom, if he can even feel love because of his narrow-mindedeness.

Any role that guy over there (<---) plays. That's the Innkeeper, prison Guard, Pauper, Drunk at Thenardier's, the Jew at the wedding, and most importantly Grantaire. I also love Javert and Enjolras, which is understudied by...DREW SARICH!

Eponine, and every other character except Cosette.
Aww, poor Cosette...
The main character in the book... the worst, most transparent, unloveable character in the show...
My favorite is Thenardier or Fantine... and mos. def. not Javert.
Fantine, definitely.

I don't see why Cosette is hated so. She's the female equivalent of Raoul from POTO.
Gavroche is a lot more fun in the book too, back when he was still Thenardier's son and had those crazy adventures with his little friends.

I LOVE THE NOVEL. Just had to shout it out.
Enjolras I think would be my favorite. Just because I can't find any flaws with his character the way I can with the other characters. But I always contradict myself anyway because things I love in the novel I'll hate in the musical, and things I love in the musical I'll hate in the novel. Blah.
OK, so who else here read that dreadful sequel "Cosette"? Or who wants to admit to having read it? I did, the whole thing. Jesus.
As for Enjolras, his only real flaw was underestimating the French military. Perhaps his skills could better have been used in politics, rather than in organizing a tiny uprising that accomplished little and would barely be a footnote in history if not for the novel. Honorable yes, but maybe his timing was just off.

Oh definately Broadway Matt I agree completely. But for me,that's not even a flaw. It's a misjudgement on his part, yes, and we could actually delve in pretty deep as to Enjolras' motives or his reasoning behind everything. I'm not sure I would call it a flaw but I can see where you're coming from. For me though, I mean flaw as in how flippin' annoying Cosette is. Poor Cosette. She means well.
I didn't actually read the sequel. IS it worth reading?
Who do you think you are MovieGuy1031? Javert is the best hands down! The character is much more stronger and sings better songs. "Stars" would kick "Master of the House's" butt any day of the week!!!
Well unless you prefer comedic relief, javertjunky.
MovieGuy1031 and I are best friends. He is playing thenardier and im javert in a local high school performance. Its just a friendly battle we have!

SallyBrown, flaw is the wrong word I'm sure- but Enjolras does seem to make bad decisions in the name of a lost cause. Which to me, makes him a dirty hippie. He's also a little too trusting. First he trusts Javert, an admitted former solder (in his story), and has to get bailed out by a little boy. Then he trusts an unusually-strong old man in an army uniform and just happens to get lucky. He'd have made a poor mob boss. But I digress, Enjolras is one of my favorites too.
Cosette gets a bad rap, she really does. I know she's not a likable character, but what does she do that's so wrong? Consider her past and her over-protected upbringing at the convent with Valjean. Can you really blame her for falling in love at the drop of a hat? If you wanna question someone's character, it should be Marius- who does many selfish things throughout, apparently can't fight very well, and needs to have his ass saved by JVJ.
As for whether to read the sequel, I say go for it if you have the free time and realize how atrocious it is. It's not badly written and can be entertaining, but it is just so incredibly unnecessary and unworthy of the Les Mis legacy.
