Thanks! it's great to read a DVD review from someone who actually knows the show (I love DVD review sites but with most musicals, from Chicago to Phantom, on film it's obvious they have no background with the prior version which, isn't a crime exactly but is annoying from my perspective).
Sounds liek the image won't be much better than my old video--just less worn out. Image DVD of course were planning on doing a remastering but said cuz of the elements this was impossible and deemed the avialable prints too far beneath their standards--so it's no surprise this is the best Hen's Tooth could to (but it is a shame that they're still not doing anamorphic prints--I own one other DVD from them, the Neil Jordan horror film Company of Wolves, one of my fave movies, and that too is non anamorphic which is especially annoying seeing as the British have a gorgeous DVD of the same film).
As for the actual movie... Well I still enjoy it. I swear I dont' just enjoy it cuz I'm Sondheim obssessed and blidn myself to the flaws--it's far from a flawed masterpiece, it's a *flawed film*. But it has enough sparks of great stuff (Diana Rigg in general, seeing Laurence and Len and Hermione in their roles, the Weekend in the Country segment, the recording of the score itself with Tunick's new tighter orchestrations, I even prefer Henrick/rick now being in a lower key in terms of harmonies with the other cast) to keep me happy. But I do admit, as a Sondheim obssessee, that part of me is just fascinated that the film, and how the film even got made.

True enough, Eric. I too am a big believer in the "bad movies we love" philosophy.
And I ain't too proud to say it.

Awww thanks--I knew you of all people would understand
Now if only we could get Image to try again to put Pacific Overtures on DVD my at last my Sondheim collection would be complete!
It's funny I always think of ALNM as the only Sondheim musical movie even though of course there's Forum--but with the number of cuts to that score it makes Dick Tracy more of a Sondheim musical in my book

Harold Prince directs this & it flops
Stroman directs The Producers & it flops
There seems to be a pattern here.
