On the way home. Was anyone else there? Alice's voice is better but I thought on the whole the show is pretty awful. I'm on my phone now but I'll post further thoughts later.

I was there! I thought the music was great; i love most of the songs - some are just breathtaking! (I confess to some familiarity with an earlier version.) There was at least one new song last night, and some changes were made in the book as well.
That said, I think it was probably a mistake to try to do so much of the dialogue. Limited rehearsal = actors reading from scripts = slow pacing = loss of audience attention. It was a great cast - just let those singers SING!
I think it was definitely a mistake to have so many stage directions read by a disembodied voice. Perhaps a narration bridging the songs would have been smoother?
Still, it is a work in progress - I think a promising one. It will be interesting to see what the next step is.
The show itself has massive book issues. Early on Simone mentions that her mother has Wilson's Disease, and of course later we learn Callie has it too. But I'd never heard of it, and I had no idea what it was. I didn't know it has both physical and psychological symptoms, which is why I was so confused when Callie landed in the psych ward. Additionally, the song she plays on the piano in the hospital is incredibly cheery. Her mother is dead and she is dying. What has changed to bring up her spirits so much?
