A Little London Night Music

With the current production at The Menier Chocolate Factory doing stellar business, wooing the critics and a West End transfer almost signed and sealed, I thought I would post the art work for the previous London productions that we have had the honor of seeing.
Broadway hasn't been so lucky but I'm pretty sure The Menier production will get to their shores as did 'Sunday In The Park with George' in the next year or so.
A Little London Night Music
Adelphi Theatre. 15th April 1975.
406 perfs.

A Little London Night Music
Piccadilly Theatre. 11th October 1989.
149 perfs.

A Little London Night Music
National Theatre, Olivier auditorium. 26th September 1995.
276 perfs in rep.

SAM!!!!!
Its my fav, always has been! And it was a gorgeous production.
It was described by The Guardian as 'superbly superior to the original Adelphi production of 1975'.

There's artwork..then there's art!

We may not agree on Spaniards and Italians..but at least we agree on something :)

Thanks for those! I have a large version (3 1/2 foot tall) of the first one hanging on my wall - think it must have been a FOH sign or something...

The more detailed album cover for the London recording is quiet stunning.

**The first post has been added to with opening dates and performance numbers.

re: A Little London Night Music

I think the first and second are pieces of art in their own right, rather than being designed specifically for the production.

The first is one of a series of four that were all on a similar theme.

But pantomime before Christmas is something i've grown up with...since age 5, we've always gone to see the Panto on the 24th December (or a day or two before). I don't disagree with panto after christmas, i just personally won't ever be at one :P

My favourite poster really reminds me of a poster for a ballet or an art gallery..i can't get over how amazing it is!

Yet this is the one most copied and by far my least favorite.

A little more obvious in this one...but god its so awful, cheap, nasty and very unSondheim.

re: A Little London Night Music

My father used to play the "tree" LP a lot when I was a child and I can remember having seen it loads of times before I spotted one, then another, then all of the people in the tree.

The one for the film version is diabolical.

Should have used this one for the DVD at least!
re: A Little London Night Music

**I think this was the DVD that was promised for years but then fell thru and it went to a cheap DVD company (Hen something or other? )that eventually got it into the shops with the cheaper art work.

I never noticed the people in the tree before either! Wow!

Really don't like that Kennedy Centre one at all

re: A Little London Night Music

I saw the Kennedy Centre production and didn't enjoy it.

The first poster above makes the show look French rather than Scandinavian.

re: A Little London Night Music

I have the original Broadway artwork showcard framed. When the London artwork came out with the Mucha (?) poster (yes it is one of a series of four) I bought that too. I believe they are called, Summer (the one pictured here),Autumn, Winter and Spring.

For my money you can't beat the original Boris Aaronson set design-although the rattling of the passing trees was a bit of an issue. Whenever I hear Perpetual Anticipation the shear sumptuousness of the diningroom set gliding on with Madame Armfeldt seated at the table enters my head. Lovely.

Calm down dear.
Rattling trees, floating dinning rooms- what are you on down there?

re: A Little London Night Music

I'm high on my memories from a time when musicals were actually worth getting excited about. There was no WE WILL ROCK YOU,no PHANTOM...oh don't get me started!

(The "floating diningroom" was actually tracked on...don't tell me mama you don't remember?).
