I am unfamiliar with this show. I know the popular "Send in the Clowns", but really that is all.
My voice teacher is planning on music directing it in the Fall and wants to recommend ME for Henrik.
Is this one of Sondheim's gems like ITW & SITPWG???
Is the film worth renting to get a overall feel for the show???

The film is not really a good adaptation of the show, from what I've heard. But the show itself is definitely a gem, easily one of Sondheim's top 5.
And you know, one question mark is enough to indicate in inquisitive sentence.
I prefer 3!!!

Yes, I can tell. I'm guessing appealing to the rules of grammar won't wean you off that preference?

Buy the OBCR if you don't have it. Everyone should own it. The music is phenominal.
I imagine it is. Sondheim has trouble with anything less.
Is Henrik a good part???
I at least would love to be Henrik, he is not the lead but is one of the main 5 characters and has some wonderful songs and a central role in a couple of subplots.
In my opinion, it's Sonheim's best, at least it's my favorite!!!!!! Totally go for it!!!!!! Henrik is an amazing part, and it looks great on a resume. However, he sings an incredible high note and has to hold it for a long time, BEWARE......
He is a great part!!!!!! You go for it!!!!!! I mean it, this is a well-respected musical, but it doesn't get put on all that much. DO IT!!!!!!
I can't rank Sondheim most of them flip back and forth to one based solely on if it is what I'm listening to but ALNM is fantastic and Henrik is a great, great role. I'd say that combo should be an automatic "YES"
Danny Gurwin played Henrik when I saw it here in Los Angeles - I think it's an awesome part. I'd play it if I weren't female!
In my opinion, Sondheim is incapable of producing anything BUT a gem.
But then again, I'm kinda part of this cult that regularly sacrafices goats and chipmunks in the name of the Most High Sondheim... so I'm sorta biased.
Ooh I'm in that cult, I missed Monday's meeting. Did we sacrifice the goat while belting "Ladies who Lunch" in honor of getting Pacific Overtures a Tony Nom as we should have?
A Little Night Music is definitely a gem. And Henrik is a great part. Hope it works out for you.
Yes, get the OBC (on Sony/Columbia Broadway masterworks) Henrick has but one solo, "Later" but figures in a key plot element and has some funny scenes where the maid tries to seduce him.
The movie is terrible and there is no Henrik in the movvie. They changed the locale of the movie to Vienna and re-named Henrik, Erik. (They also cut 6 songs! Unforgivable.)
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
Henrik is NOT a wimp, unless he's shallowly played that way. He's a deeply confused young man who is trying to do what's expected of him -- even though it's not what he truly wants out of life. "Wimps" don't throw themselves at busty housemaids while wearing cleric's clothing!

A Little Night Music is one of my favorite shows.
So many wonderful songs
"Every Day A Little Death"
"A Weekend in the Country"
"Send in the Clowns"
just three I love.... It needs to havea glamourous no holds bar revival. It should be done right. REAL CAR. Huge Mansion. Lush. Lovely.
I have wanted to play Henrik for years! And I play cello! Jump on it! It is a touching and very funny show with a gorgeous score. My favorite recording is actually the original London cast. The orchestra sounds better and even if the singers are not quite as good, they show more character in their voices. Plus, the overall recording sounds richer and more lush. The Broadway recording sounds rather canned and cold. If I were you, I'd starting rehearsing "Later" as soon as possible. That is the TOUGHEST song in the show and quite possibly Sondheim's most difficult song to date. It's one thing to sing along with the recording, but when you try it on your own with the accompaniment, it is A BITCH! Plus, you have to mime playing the cello part which has a different rhythm than you are singing and make it look convincing.
Personal confession: I hate the song Send in the Clowns unless I am actually seeing the show.
