Why aren't the lyrics in the overture sung on the OBCR?

Probably for the same reason there are cuts in a lot of shows' OBCR from those days. You could not put as much music on an LP as you can nowadays on a CD.

I want to say those lyrics were added to the original London run, so it was after the OBCR had been made...but don't hold me to that.
The OBC soundboard has the sung lyrics.
^^Exactly, which is why I was confused.
I can understand them taking out the dialogue bits that go over the waltzes, but I don't understand why they go through the trouble of singing the la's when they could just sing the actual lyrics.

Eh, personally I like just listening to the piece without the lyrics.
Two words: Goddard Lieberson. Despite the fact that he was brilliant, he was notorious for doing strange little changes like this.

I saw the original Broadway production many times. The "overture" was long! If my memory's correct it began with a "La la" tuning of the singers, then "Remember" then segued to "Soon", ending with "Glamorous Life". What's on the OBCR is a mere snippet, so I guess they decided to dispense with the lyrics and keep the "la la" tuning conceit in place.
