I had the great pleasure of seeing a staged reading of Bill Finn's A New Brain at UCLA's Reprise series. I haven't seen a musical that celebrates life as much as that show. Terrific performances by all including the original Schwinn, Mr. Malcolm Gets. Also great performances by Kevin Earley who was amazing as Roger, Stuart Ambrose who sang the solo in Heart and Music and Karen Morrow, who was tear jerking as the mother. I was amazed to discover that what is on the CD is pretty much what you get on stage with the exception of a couple numbers which tighten up the plot. The only thing I still don't understand is what is the importance of the homeless lady in this story? She sings great songs though. Oh well, for all in all it was a sensational evening!
I really wish I'd been able to see this show. That's what comes from having to be at a rehearsal. I'm really glad that Reprise did another great job and that you got to see Malcolm and Karen and my special favorite Kevin Earley (!!!) in this show, and that it was as good as I'd imagined. Well, I did get to see Pippin last Friday.
Thanks for your post! I wish I could've been there to see it! From what I've heard so far, it sounds like it was a fantastic show. That's what I get for living all the way out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.
i was there too!!! i'm a huuuuge fan of the cd but didn't really know much else about the show. my favorite part had to be malcolm gets letting loose during "time (and music)." or "the music still plays on." i loved when the song was finished and some guy on the left side of the theatre just let out a huge sigh. or when some guy in the back whooped at the end of "change." the audience was truly amazing last night (of course, inspired by the wonderful work of the cast.) you could tell everybody was really excited about being there, especially since it was a one night only deal. pm me if you wanna discuss more about the show!
