I've recently fell in love with this recording, and I'm interested to learn more about the show. Was it done in a minimalist fashion? and how many roles do the characters that play multiple roles actually portray?

It was originally done Off-Broadway at Lincoln Center. It's a cast of ten with only the Waitress and the Thin Nurse being played by the same person. Kristin Chenoweth played them in the original cast and on the CD.
