'Fela' 4/5 -A great new show that sadly wont be around long enough for it to get the praise it so richly deserves. I knew nothing of this guy before hand but this show certainly painted a great picture of him and his artistry.
re: A Real Pot Of Gold.
'Memphis' 4/5- I feel like I want to say this is a juke box musical because thats kind of how its resented. A very weak story lies underneath some terrific music and choreography. Doubt this will hit London but it seemed to go down a storm on Tuesday night.
re: A Real Pot Of Gold.
'Superior Donuts' - 5/5 A great new play from the guy who gave us the equally brilliant 'August:Osage County'. I certainly hope London gets to see this, it would suit the Donmar perfectly. One of the smallest Broadway audiences I have seen in ages.
re: A Real Pot Of Gold.
'Bye Bye Birdie' 3/5 Not the best production that New York could have had I'm sure. Didnt half plod in a lot of scenes and some of the parts are mis-cast. The cast seemed to be not that interested in what they had to present. Very strange. Audience a little subdued at the end. I was nearly asleep with jet lag.
A great new theatre by the way, God knows what those on the Broadway board are on about.

Phantom,

Actually the meet up could theoretically have happened at 7:45 considering that the show starts at eight. Alas, it didn't happen due to the fact that I didn't get the message until too late.

Oh and Mama, if you think it is cold here in NYC now, wait till end of December beginning of January.

Winston up for a double slap, could of said there is a bit of 'Desire under the Elms' but that is history.

Cheers for the reviews, short an sweet an to the point, just as I like it. Surprised you have not seen Rainbow yet, I guess that is where you are going to tonight?

Glad you liked Fela, mama - maybe I should have given it a try while I was there - but I listened to some of the music and hated it, so decided to give it a miss. Superior Donuts I am very sorry I missed though - hopefully I'll catch it another time. Also really hope Memphis is still running when I get to NYC next year - wanted to see it but just could not fit it in last time. (Can't really call it a juke box show though - it has a totally original score. And everything I've read about it suggests that DiPietro's book is very strong - so it was interesting to read that you seemed to think otherwise.)

Surprised by your comments on Birdie - I loved it. The only weakness I saw was Gina Gershon - the rest of the cast were outstanding the night I saw it. It was my last night of a fantastic feast of theatre and it sent me home with a huge smile.

"'Shrek' as all but ready for London in November next year. I've done some digging around and London has been ready to go for some time, they just needed a big theatre. Drury Lane is 99% its home!"

Baz reported in this mornings Daily Mail, that Jeffrey Katzenberg. the man who runs Dreamworks Animation has been seen looking around the Palladium, so looks like Shrek is going there next October, both theatres were tipped for Ghost or Wizard of Oz, these still have to find new homes! One problem London does not have many mid size theatres like New York, they are either too big or too small.

Just heard that Wiz of Oz is delayed... maybe this is why it's gone to the Palladium now and they will keep Oliver running until Wizard of Oz ready and move that into the Lane.

'Finians Rainbow' 2/5 BORED BORED BORED.
This is a classic example of bringing back old musicals that are just not up to it today -they just dont work!.
This show is a week old and it looks about 40!
It looks cheap and feels cheap. The one saving grace fro me was the always wonderful Terri White but that is about it. I'm sure I've seen some of those sets going around the Qudos panto circuit the last few years.
Pot Of Gold - more like a crock of ****.

Surprised Mama, you did not like Rainbow, I wonder what the critics found so captivating? This show might be a bit too American to work here, Bob thought this was 'highly enjoyable', be interesting to here more opinions on here from more British theatre fanatics.

I hope to check this out myself in March.

re: A Real Pot Of Gold.

Good to hear some 'first-hand' opinions - even if I might ultimately disagree with them. I hope you enjoyed your stay overall Mama (even if you were deprived of the opportunity of slapping Winston upside the head ;->)

I will almost certainly see Superior Donuts on my next visit later this month - love Michael McKean, (plus the one play I had pre-booked - Vigil, starring Malcolm Gets) has posted early closing 10 days before I'm due to arrive. re: A Real Pot Of Gold.

I'm still very much looking forward to Finian's Rainbow because it's supposed to be old-fashioned and magical and oirish. Just like me (sort of)!

Fela didn't really appeal to me, but I may see Memphis now I have a free slot. Did you get to see Wishful Drinking?
Seen some shows in my time....
