A Real Pot Of Gold. A Week in New York!

A Real Pot Of Gold. A Week in New York!
The new Broadway production of 'Finians Rainbow' opened last night to one of the best sets of reviews I can remember of recent years.
Mark this one down for a London season.

Now, how the hell, with Broadways ridiculous 'one matinee a week' policy, am I gonna fit this in next week?

re: A Real Pot Of Gold.

London season? Really?

We can't even get a limited run of In the Heights. Still it is a nice thought we could get some new musicals in London.

re: A Real Pot Of Gold.

Its never been produced in the UK. The mega awful movie is all the British public have had here and that was pretty popular att he time due to its English star Tommy Steele along side Fred Astaire and Petula Clark.
Honestly, the movie is super bad.

I love old movies but yes it is super bad. Couldnt stick with it. Was on C5 the other month to.

I think if it was done at the National or Open Air it would be great, cant see it working in commercial West End though

I am looking forward to reading the reviews and hope to check this out.

Maybe a nice little season at the national?! That'd be great!

re: A Real Pot Of Gold.

Although the score is wonderful, this show strikes me as having the same sort of Americana as The Music Man and Bye Bye Birdie that doesn't settle well with British audiences.

Well, good reviews don't always mean big box office. Besides, the reviews just came out on Friday so that doesn't help the weekend much, though it will hopefully help with advance sales.

And the St. James is a very large theatre - 1700 seats to fill every performance.

I agree with you theatreguy, I might of been a bit hasty in what I said, it be interesting to see how this pans out on TKTS over the next couple of weeks.

Also keep in mind that it is playing in one of Broadway's bigger houses so it would be hard to fully sell it out.

MamasDoin'Fine, keep in mind that when it comes to performance schedules for Broadway shows there is not one set schedule that all shows abide by. While it is true that most show do have the same schedule, some don't. On Broadway it's 8 performances a week two afternoon performances within the week and one day off. Shows can and have orgainzed that however they like.

For example, Next To Normal two performances on Saturdays and Sundays with their day off being Wednesday. Phantom plays on Monday's so their day off is Sunday.

Winston, think Mama was bemoaning the matinee schedule, that Broadway is very rigid at 2pm, Wednesday, where in London we are more flexible and have matinee performances on Tuesday, Thursday as well as Wednesday, Mama wants to maximize his theatre viewing.

A tourist coming to London, such as Winston, could see 6 shows on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, where Mama could see only 4 on on Broadway, in fact if you added Friday, it is possible to see 8 shows in London and only 5 in New York.

re: A Real Pot Of Gold.

Since I got here yesterday (sadly, a few hours to late to run the Marathon again!!!!!!!!!!!), I've had so many offers to go and see this that Im almost in two minds to try and fit it in -but when?
Terri White really is the solitary reason I would make myself sit through this.

And yes Winston, its the ridiculous midweek matinees in New York I'm referring to.
Its only in recent years that 2 shows on Sundays etc etc etc has slowly come in. As little as 7 or 8 years ago it was still solidly Eves at 8, Wed and Sat at 2 and Sun at 3-that is still very much it today.
I'm well aware after 25 years of visiting New York theatre how restrictive the schedule is but no doubt you'll give me yet another lesson!

Mama, I got to tell you this for your own good. And keep in mind I speak from a place of love.

Your an old geezer. It's bound to happen. It's up to the young folk like me to help you remember that which you've forgotten in your old age.

I can't see this transfering! I'm shocked it made it's way to Broadway, god bless it!

Great reviews aside, the show isn't going to pull in the crowds to that huge theatre. It will be gone by the Spring I think... So many new/transfers are wanting to Spring openings on B'way.

Winston meet me outside the St James tonight at 7.45pm for a good slapping! (I'll get banned now for threatening behavior!)

re: A Real Pot Of Gold.

I'll think you be alright on this one mum, the mods understand what your slappings are like!

Goo to see free love is spreading now, perhaps you should meet outside The Al Hirschfeld instead. Great reply there from Winston!!!

Mama consider a slap from me too, you are ever so naughty I was expecting a Broadway update by now!

Phantom, thanks. And, what can I say, I am just being honest. Keep in mind that they say that the truth can hurt sometimes.

re: A Real Pot Of Gold.

No winston, your initial post come from a good place, but can be read as patronising, however I love your reply. Did we get some loving at the St James theatre?

I like to point out to you both Mama and Winston, the same rendnavous could not happen in London for 2 reasons.

1, The St James theatre is in New York
2, You would of missed the curtain by 15 minutes if you met in London at 19:45.

Just thought I add the later, in case you both didn't know!

re: A Real Pot Of Gold.

I've got you terri White already, will she do?

I'm actually staying an extra night now and leaving Friday. This means I will be taking up the offer of the literally 1000s of comps being thrown around town for this show. Strong rumors are that it will close or 'shutter' as they say here in the first two weeks of January.

'Shrek' as all but ready for London in November next year. I've done some digging around and London has been ready to go for some time, they just needed a big theatre. Drury Lane is 99% its home!

OH and it's bloody freezing here!

re: A Real Pot Of Gold.

Hope you enjoyed Finians? I think it will definatly be off Jan time along with many others! I can't say I see Ragtime even lasting to fill in a year before LND goes in end of 2010.

I think Shrek will work well in the Lane and be a lot more successful given the Autumn opening (the film released in the Summer) - its exactly the same opening with the film time Hairspray had in 2007. Oliver is due to come off Early September 2010 (after Summer hols)

Next Cameron theatre venture... Hair!! (and his many many films in the pipeline!)
