South Florida Marc---I agree, if there is ANY reason to tell this story again, switch the roles. He's the up-and-comer and she's the older fading star.
Or is that too much like Sunset Blvd?

say what you will about BARBRA'S Version. The finale is extraordinary "With One More Look at You / Watch Closely Now" It is 7 minutes of pure BARBRA nirvana. no cuts. no edits. live singing. just amazing. legendary.

Posted: 3/25/15 at 9:55amDid they say anything about modernizing it, or would it still be a period piece? Also I happen to love the idea of switching the genders. It would be a fun twist on the whole thing.

I never thought the Garland version was all that great. Janet Gaynor's version was good, but both films are too maudlin by half.
The Sreisand pic, while howlingly bad , had that 70's Afro look that Babs loved and it's fascinating really.

henrikegerman, I said there were four versions, said there was ALSO a Bollywood version, and linked to the Wikipedia article on What Price Hollywood? I didn't say What Price Hollywood? is the Bollywood version.
From Wikipedia:
"Four years after [What Price Hollywood?] was released, Selznick [who produced it] approached Cukor [who directed it] and asked him to direct A Star Is Born. The plot was so similar to What Price Hollywood? that Cukor declined. RKO executives considered filing a plagiarism suit against Selznick International Pictures because of the obvious similarities in the story, but eventually opted not to take any legal action. Cukor later directed the 1954 musical remake starring Judy Garland."

No problem, henrick. Your correction was kind and obviously well intended. I just didn't want everyone here thinking I'm even more stupid than I actually am. :)

Oh, the seventies STAR is just a mess! The final twenty (or at least it feels like that) minutes are Barbra working through Kubler-Ross' stages of grief via watered-down prog rock until finally the backlighting hits her afro and she almost literally becomes a haloed saint.
Needless to say, it's rumored she directed a lot of it.

South FL Marc, switching the roles, that's a good idea, really.
Even more fun, forget the normal auditions and have a whole new TV competition and the winner gets to play the up-and-comer. Judges can be women already stars who have already, publicly, "helped" their husbands or boyfriends go from aspiring to successful.
Okay, maybe too much coffee for me this morning.

Please tell us IN YOUR OWN WORDS, Fantod, why "[t]he Barbra version is so impossibly terrible it's amazing."

^^^^^^
I'm not sure any person can properly relate how bad it is in words.

Posted: 3/26/15 at 2:55pmI would really like to know what specifically brought the writer to state it's "so impossibly terrible it's amazing." I'd like to hear examples of why this is so.

Posted: 3/26/15 at 3:13pm^ So would I, because for me it wasn't THAT bad. I watch it when it's on tv for entertainment value.

Posted: 3/26/15 at 3:21pmDoes THE ARTIST count as a remake of A STAR IS BORN -- the stories are similar, in that rising star/falling star kind of way, and THE ARTIST is as immensely genially charming and entertaining, to me at any rate, as the actual films of the story are not.

I think "The Artist" is a combination of "A Star Is Born" and "Singin' in the Rain."
In both cases it's told from the other perspective. In the Star-is-Born scenes, the story is told from "his" POV, not hers. In the Singin-in-the-Rain scenes, it's told from the silent star's POV, not the up-and-coming Talkie star.
There are elements of a few other classic films in there as well, but I don't believe "The Artist" is a retelling of any single film or single plot line.

for anyone who doesn't believe BARBRA directed A Star Is Born just needs to watch the DVD - w/ the STREISAND commentary on. It is like watching a new movie. A hilarious, egotastic fun time.. Her every statement start with I.. I did this, I did that. BARBRA IS GOD !!

Posted: 3/26/15 at 4:53pmWell, if you want to make it really new, how about Bradley Cooper and, say, Justin Bieber instead of Beyoncé? (And, in a twist, make Bieber the one to die at the end. Audiences will flock to the movie to see that.)

Posted: 3/27/15 at 4:21amOf course Streisand didn't direct the '76 version. She was more than capable of cajoling/bullying/harassing/charming/threatening Frank Pierson into doing whatever she wanted. Why take on the extra work? Although their "disagreements" on the set are legendary, there was never any question as to who would be replaced if it ever came to that.
