A Second Hand Memory Question
#0A Second Hand Memory Question
Posted: 1/22/05 at 5:16pmAlthough I am a die-hard Woody Allen fan (isn't every New Yorker?), it just occured to me that I haven't seen "A Second Hand Memory", his latest off-B'Way offering. And it closes tomorrow. I know that it has been selling out almost every day, so will I be able to get tickets for either tomorrow's 3 or 7:30 shows? If I can't get a seat, what is the SRO policy?

Posted: 1/22/05 at 5:27pmWith the blizzard, you'll probably have some luck with the cancellation line (you can probably see any show in town tomorrow without a problem, if we do indeed get 12-24 inches as predicted).

I'm going to go tomorrow, probably to the 3pm matinee. I love Elizabeth Marvel.
Hey, Bronxbound, why did Martha Plimpton drop out?

Posted: 1/22/05 at 11:01pmI'm sorry. I'm not familiar with a Martha Plimpton or what went on in pre-production. Elizabeth Marvel is wonderful is this show as well. It's a good thing she's a smoker in real life.

Thank you anyway.
I'm definitely going tomorrow, even if I have to stand.
In that case, what does standing room go for?

Posted: 1/23/05 at 12:19amomg alma was by far my favorite character. funny story: after the show my friends and i were just hanging by the door, and michael mckean came out and started signing autographs. there was this short girl standing next to him smoking and she looked like she thought she was soooooooo cool. i realized it was carly jibson seeing michael (they did hairspray together). funny.

Great story, LightMyCandle! I can't believe Carly smokes. That's gotta take its toll on the voice.
Having read "A Second Hand Memory", even though I've yet to see it, I think Elizabeth is a better fit than Martha would have been. She was the best Hedda Gabler I've ever seen. Much better than Kate Burton.

I got seats in the fourth row for today's last matinee, and it was very good. There were obvious flaws, but they were not huge, and it was very entertaining on a whole. Elizabeth Marvel made an excellent Alma. She is, without a doubt, the most talented stage actress in New York, because she is so versatile. She brought heart and sass and beauty to the role. As the parents, Dominic Chianese and Beth Fowler did great work, but I thought Beth's role was underwritten. She made the best of it, though.
And now, to Mr. McKean. Wow! This is the performance of his career. If this were on Broadway, he would be prepping his Tony acceptance speech.
As Charles Isherwood said in his early December review of the show, there is a feeling that this show started its life as a screenplay.
There is only one performance left, at 7:30 tonight. Too bad.
3 stars.

Posted: 1/23/05 at 7:11pmI am a student at Atlantic as well and had the oppourtunity to see it on friday night. and while yes it was great to see our Kate up there, and Michael McKean WAS fabulous, i thought the show was incredibly weak. Nicky Katt and Erica Leerhsen were both painful to watch. A guy in the back row laughed out loud during their kiss towards the end (where Michael's character catches them), vocalizing what the whole audience had to be thinking. There was absolutely no chemistry between them. Mary Beth Piel was actually in the audience (sitting next to that man who laughed!!) and afterwards SHE was laughing, and that same guy said "I mean we love them, but really?!?! I want my two hours back!!" and i whole heartedly agree...

Posted: 1/23/05 at 7:36pmI also saw this Friday night and tought it was atrocious. I LOVE Woody Allen, but this had to be his worst piece, film or stage, by far. Contrived. That states it all. He seemed to do every possible thing to these characters to force them deeper and deeper into the pits of utter despair...all told by a character who treats it like a big joke, with catchy jazz music to back her up. By the show's end, I despised every single character on stage. A friend of mine said, "what i love about woody's endings is that even in despair, there is always that small glimmer of hope." Not the case here. The only thing I can imagine the characters on stage doing past the show's curtain is committing suicide. Terrible. With embarassingly bad performances by Nicki Katt and Erica Leerhsen. What a shame.

Posted: 1/23/05 at 7:59pmehhh i dont think that they made up for them. I mean, remember when Phil ended it and Diane went to see Eddie?? Erica was like grabbing at the bed with the worst "fake cry" i've ever seen! I felt like i was watching a high school preformance. And they were both like speaking at a really weird, abnormal pitch. ugh it was awful. any STUDENT at atlantic couldve done a better job haha
