A Stroke of Dumb Luck

Tomorrow, I am off to NYC to see both Thoroughly Modern Millie and Nine...but for some reason, whenever I go to see shows, the leads are always out.
Gypsy - Bernedette
Hairspray - Marissa
42nd Street - Christine Ebersol (when she was in it)
So I keep having this feeling that Sutton and all the dazzling ladies will be away from their shows tomorrow. Eek!

I used to have the same luck but its become much better... some understudies ive seen:
Seussical- Janine Lamanna out
Charlie Brown- Kristin out
Producers- Matthew Broderick out
Aida- Heather Headly out
Cabaret- Molly Ringwald out
42nd Street- Christine Ebersole out
***the list goes on... just to name a few***
I saw Nine and Thoroughly Modern Millie recently or somewhat recently and had no understudies whatsoever.
Good luck

Posted: 7/18/03 at 1:38pmYou did not state which one was matinee. Usually in limited runs like Nine, the actor is in every show. I have seen Millie and Nine as matinees and Antonio and Sutton were in them. Do not fear. Once in a while, I do get disappointed for example: Missing Roger Bart in the Producers, Raul Esperanza in Cabaret and Molly Ringwald in Enchanted April but usually I am not. Harvey, I am told, never missed a performance!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted: 7/18/03 at 4:04pmI was quite, no, enormously devastated when Molly Ringwald's understudy went on as Sally at a performance of Cabaret I saw last December. I had gotten myself so friggin' excited to see Molly and then we get there and there's this board they put in the lobby saying, "At this performance the role of Sally Bowles, usually played by Molly Ringwald, will be played by Heather Laws" It was my first Broadway experience and it scarred me for life. Now I'm paranoid about missing Bernadette in Gypsy. Even though Heather Laws was very good, she was not Molly.

Posted: 7/18/03 at 4:20pmI went back to see Molly after I saw her understudy (Molina Govich) and she was amazing! Her Cabaret was thrilling. One of the best moments ive spent in a theatre in a while.

I have never seen Charlotte d'Amboise perform. Everytime I see a shows she's in, an understudy goes on for her: JEROME ROBBINS'BROADWAY, DAMNED YANKEES, COMPANY, CONTACT...the list goes on.
I've gotten to the point where I feel she has spies in the lobby and when they report that I've alked through the door, she calls in sick.
