I saw the show tonight and was pleasantly surprised. The first act was rather slow, but the second just sprung to life. I did feel though as if I were watching Les Miserable-lite. The music, except for a few numbers, was nothing special. The performances however made up for it. James Barbour is utterly fantastic - a marvelous voice. Aaron Lazar was equally good. Both were amazing to watch.
I am embarrased to admit that I never read the book or saw the movie so I was flying blind story-line wise. I was hooked throughout Act 2.
I stage doored and had all of the main principle cast sign my window card. Frank Wildhorn came out of the stag door and I asked him to sign it - he hesitated at first stating that it wasn't his show (which I knew) but he ultimately did sign. I asked him about Camille Claudel (which I saw with his ex-wife in Connecticut) and he said it will be playing in Vienna!
Everyone else was so engaging at the stage door, including the adorable younger stars of the show. James Barbour came out last and was very humble. He stayed to sign for everyone. He even told everyone to tell their friends about the show if we liked it.
Lots of Bway people in the audience, as it was a dark night for most shows. Tony Roberts, Curtis Holbrook, Michael Arden were the ones I noticed. I am sure there were more.

Thanks for the review! I'm really looking forward to seeing the show on Halloween night!
I hope by then they have the programs out *crosses fingers* (I know it usually takes longer than that but a girl can hope).

I am glad you enjoyed the show. I LOVED it and if I go home for the weekend will be hitting up this show while I am at home.
I am looking forward to getting the cast album which from what I understand is going to be recorded in october at some point in the month.

Posted: 9/9/08 at 2:18pmGood to hear they're going to record it (if that is indeed the case) because while the concept recording has satisfied me thus far, I need to have Barbour singing this score on CD.

I was talking to Brandi about Frank/shows at the stage door, but I wonder whose going to be starring as Camille. My first guess would be Brandi, so either it's not going to happen until Brandi's done with ATOTC, they star __ (I forget her name, she's done F.W's Dracula over there & Jekyll), or it won't happen. And I feel like it won't happen, but I'll hope for the best.
And Frank's a very humble/seems shy man. Also, I'm pretty sure he knows he's not the most liked guy on Broadway [ever] which is unfortunate!! It is funny/strange he came out of the stagedoor though. You'd think he'd try to see the show and how much could he see back there? Who knwos! I was hoping the night I went he would randomly appear!!
On completely random stage dooring notes, James Barbour came out towards teh beginning when I saw it and was indeed very humble--something I didn't expect. And Brandi was all dressed up! (LOL) But I've seen pictures of her on these types of message boards from weeknights and she wasn't. Hmmmmmm interesting!
And I hope they record the Broadway score. It's much different from the Concept Album, despite most of the people in it. And as I've said, Alex (Jill, the creator's brother) does a nice job as Sydney, but I do prefer James (sorry Jill!).

Here's my bitchy comment:
He was probably keeping an eye on the trophy wife.
OK I'm done.
