I was told today that my old high school chorus performed "Popular" and "For Good" at their spring concert (and oddly enough, there were no solos---or at least, my sister said no soloist were on the program and my old teacher was always big on crediting)
Is this going to be the big new thing for choirs to perform? (Has "Seasons of Love" truly made its rounds to EVERY high school in America?)
I am interested to see how they are performed with a group.
Has anyone seen these done?

Yeah. Wicked is the new thing in high schools (and middle schools even). I've seen so many choirs and show choirs do Wicked songs, it's insane. Some are done well, some aren't. Some had solos, some didn't. I've seen "defying gravity" done many many times, "for good" many times, "I'm not that girl" once, "one short day" a few times, "no one mourns the wicked" once, "as long as you're mine" a couple times, and popular a few times. Like I said, crazy.
Edit: forgot about "dancing through life" - saw that once too...basically every song. Well, I guess I'm still waiting to see someone do "something bad". Hahaha!

Really? As Long As You're Mine?
I don't think my HS chorus teacher would have allowed that one... if sung properly it's intense.... & it certainly doesn't seem like an ensemble piece!

Hahaha, I'd love to see As Long As You're Mine done as an ensemble. That'd provide a good laugh...and I bet it's been done
my high school choir sang "for good" as our senior song.
i saw a middle school sing "defying gravity." it was...interesting....
at my friends school, she and another girl sang "for good" at graduation.
my chorus sang phantom of the opera and it sucked. that was off topic.
Back when I was in high school show choir, we were performing the Les Miz medley (no solos). I hated that medley...especially when we were choreographed to do the "One Day More" step.
Show choir...could it get any more cheesier?
A choir singing Defying Gravity?!?!?! I would go to hear that one!!!!!!

There are actually real, published, choral adaptations of Defying Gravity, Popular, and For Good.

Search www.jwpepper.com or any other large music distributor, and you'll see them.
is how some girls I know (who are high school students) believe they can sing exactly like Kristin Chenoweth. Then, when they actually do get on stage, they sing "Popular" and completely bomb. Just because you feel you have a high voice, doesn't meet you can pull off what Cheno does.

Schools in my area have done songs from Wicked in their choirs. I can't see how it would be any good because they would have to rearrange it.

Two years ago we did 'Seasons of Love' in our Women's Ensemble choir. I think that was fine because I mean that is a group song (with featured solos) unlike 'Defying Gravity' and 'For Good'. I thought it worked out well. I have recording of it and it sounds good to me. haha.

I like Seasons of Love for choirs...it works with an ensemble (because it actually IS an ensemble song) and it has great blending. My chorus sang it at my graduation.
The funny thing is that EVERY chorus has sung it. I would dare to say it's the most sung Broadway song in high schools (at least for the past several years). And the thing is that very few people know anything about the show---the intensity of the song is lost, but it still sounds great. I don't think anyone in my chorus had seen Rent when we performed it.
I would rather keep it circulating instead of butchering something from Wicked that is not made for a group (plus SoL is a better song)

I completely agree, Millie.
Also, even worse then choirs singins 'Defying Gravity' is when they sing 'Someone Like You' from Jekyll and Hyde.
I heard a choir did that but I never actually heard them sing it. But alot was changed. And I jsut think that's disgusting.
As Long As You're Mine shouldn't be sung as a choral. It shouldn't be sung at all unless you are amazingly good. Defying Gravity i can have heard sung but i didn't think it was good.

How in the world did they do that?
Are there 30 girls trying to belt all at the same time?--- sounds bad and damaging

I believe that the choral arrangement features a soloist, with a choral background.

Yes, "As Long as You're Mine" has been done, like I said. Both were show choir ballads. One was better than the other - but neither were that good. It really SHOULDN'T be done but it HAS been done. None of the wicked songs I heard were very good except for No One Mourns the Wicked, For Good, and I kinda liked a couple of the versions of Defying Gravity (it sounds A LOT different as a choir - but if they do it right, it sounds okay).
EDIT: Most of the versions of defying gravity I have heard were Choral arrangements. Most of them had guys singing as well. --- not 30 girls trying to belt *cringe*

In my day, every choir (including mine) did "Corner of the Sky."
(Thanks to Me) My choir sang "For Good" at Graduation. It...wasn't good. We had a few solos but nothing major.
It was just a mess though.

I'm not a huge fan of choral arrangements of Bway songs however, For Good has actually grown on me though has a different feel than it does as performed in context, but it's a nice piece on its own.
I performed a medly at our Broadway Show (our choir is over 350 students) from Wicked this year. We did:
1. No One Mourns the Wicked (chorus...glinda comes out)
2. What is this Feeling? (Duet in beginning - we come in as students...a fast costume change i might add)
3. Popular (glinda)
4. One Short Day (elp and glind..with chorus)
6. Defying Gravity (we danced...and staged - sang last part but mainly our elph)
7. For Good (small glinda elp part...written 6 part)
Was so much fun. But then again. It was quiete easy to sing. Aside from No One Mourns the Wicked...which had somer higher notes for us first tenors and the first sopranos...but otherwise really fun harmonies and that were really pleasing.
