Since this song was written for Toni Braxton, it sits a little low for most Belles. When she came in, the other keys in the score were adjusted as well. "Aida" was a much better match for her vocal style and range.
I ask in all honesty/What would life be?/Without a song and a dance, what are we?/So I say "Thank you for the music/For giving it to me."
At one point Amazon used to sell "On The Record"- If they dont have it, it is sold in Disney World- (you can order it direct from them) - Dont have their merchandise number on me, but 407-wdisney would be able to direct you to the right place...
You could also (at one time) download the song from www.limewire.com
Susan Egan recorded it on her CD "So Far" and I prefer that version - you can insert it on the Beauty and the Beast OBCR on your iTunes or whatever( I did at least because I'm dorky) and it fits very nicely. I know she never sang it onstage but I like having her do it nonetheless.
Now what would you say if today I started over?
Without a thing but this taped together four leaf clover
And I'll pretend like everything is already alright
And I'll run toward the sun till the castle's out of sight
""Aida" was a much better match for her vocal style and range."
Almost all of the Aida score had to be lowered for her vocal style and range as well.
The version of "A Change in Me" that Ashley Brown sings on the On the Record CD was not the same as the one used in the show. Brown sang a much rangier, beltier version of the song. The song was, as noted, originally written for Braxton's limited range. When Ashley Brown came in as Belle, they changed the song, and used the rangier version. After she left, all of the remaining Belles used that version.
I too insert Susan Egan's "A Change in Me" whenever I listen to the Original Broadway cast recording. They should have released a 10th Anniversary reissue of the CD with the song included, but whatever.
The BatB Closing video on broadwayworld was great because they had clips of several different Belles singing both "Home" and "A Change in Me." Both acting-wise and singing-wise, Ashley Brown is by far my favorite
Ashley Brown was my second favorite Belle (keeping in mind I never saw Egan), but certainly the most thrilling vocally. My favorite Belle is still Ann Sanders.
