I've only seen regional productions of my favorite Golden Age shows, but...
GA: West Side Story
60s/70s/80s: Sweeney Todd and Cabaret (based on cast recordings)
90s: Rent (and The Lion King, but really only for the choreography and added songs)
2000s: Wicked
I've sort of noticed that GA musicals featured significantly more dancing than recent musicals. (With a few possible exceptions) Also, there wasn't as much belting. Starting (I think) with the Sondheim era, songs started to get harder (meaning wider ranges, belting, etc.) These aren't necessarily bad changes, but they do sort of influence other shows that are still in the works.

Some of the great "golden age" musicals have their reputations thanks to recordings. Some of them don't hold up well in revival. The last 3 revivals of OKLAHOMA! were all financial failures, although I believe that the show is done so often that people would not make a point of seeing it on Broadway.
CABARET was dark and edgy in 1966 but in 1987 is seemed tame. The Sam Mendes came along and gave us an even darker, edgier version for the 1990s.
CAROUSEL needed to be re-thought to work effectively in 1994.
I am more concerned with today's shows and how they will play for audiences in 30, 40 or 50 years. I think the shows I mentioned will still be in active rep. Any others?
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

I base my choices primarily on form and style and in particular, what it is that makes this the uniquely American art form of American Musical Comedy.
