Marquise, I loooooooooove your avatar.
Of course, you'll get those groups of audiences (most likely the more younger ones) who will be obsessed with how Adam Pascal and Idina Menzel are so hot. I think there's really no avoiding that. But I think there will be a lot of people who will have a greater respect for Rent and it's overall message. They'll understand why it touched so many hearts and why people love it so much. That's just my take on it. I don't think we should worry too much about it. And if it does not live up to our expectations, we always have the Broadway production. ^_^
thank you emcee...i have to show my girl rosario some support.
i've been reading anthony rapp's positive thoughts on her singing and her performance during the movie's rehearsals. man i canNOT wait for this movie to be released. although i do love daphne i think rosario will absolutely make this role her own.
YAY ROSARIO! She has so much personality, it's going to be perrrrrfect. And Anthony supports her so much, it's great. He looked so proud when he was watching her shoot.
what scene did you see Anthony watch Rosario film?
*apologizes for the thread jack*
A few lines of Without You - so the clip you heard.
Not too terrible a threadjack, anyway. Same basic topic.
I'm so excited to see Rosario. At first I was dissapointed that Daphne wouldn't be playing Mimi but I'm very happy with their choice anyways. I'm really looking foward to seeing her take on the character.
I think that there is probably a wide audience out there that will get the message of the show. Broadway shows- even ones with cultish followings like Rent- aren't even on some people's radars, so the movie will definitely reach an audience out there that would have never even considered seeing Rent before it was available in their local movie theater. It's not that they shouldn't be able to like the show either, they just didn't have the same experience as seeing the stage show first.
And some won't get the message, but is that really a problem? Not everyone loves Rent after seeing it on stage, but that doesn't mean that it would have been better had they had not seen it all.
I just think it's not fair to say that one person's response/obsession level with the show is more appropriate than someone else's. The majority of current fans (myself included) were not camping out in the line to see the OBC back in the beginning. So those fans that did may say that their perspective of the show is superior to yours, because you can only live vicariously through the OBCR. If you involve yourself in the "I'm a bigger/better Rent fan than you!" arguments, then clearly, you lost the original message of the show as well.
Besides, if 10 other girls are doing Out Tonight in the school talent show, your version can have the original stage costume and choreography, and you can put them all to shame with your fire escape dancing.
P.S. Marquise, where did you get that picture? Rosario looks so pretty!
Okay, I tend to disagree with you on a point. I really don't at all see the harm of people singing the songs or enjoying musical movies for different reasons than us. Take Chicago for instance. Let's say 1/3 of Chicago movie fans liked it so much, they decided to see the show. Now let's suppose 1/3 of those people liked the experience and decided to check out more broadway theatre. Now Broadway has more fans!
And I would love it if my high school sang Broadway songs, personally. Jonathan's songs are so amazingly written, I think it will be great for people to listen and to appreciate them.
And yes, you may have the Adam's hot fans...but suppose(I honestly have a friend like this) someone who is a huge Rent fan wants to bring a friend to see the movie with them. The friend asks if there's any hot guys in it, and the Rent fan answers yes, so the friend ends up seeing it and maybe really likes it aside from Adam. Who knows?
I think a majority of Rent moviegoers will truly appreciate the message, and as for the littler fans this is how I view it...I'd much rather have 12-year olds singing Rent songs terribly than singing Britney Spears song terribly...that's just pain to one's ears.

I just hope Idina doesn't get more fans...then I'll NEVER have a chance to...er...n/m...
...that was selfish.
I hope that everyone starts learning who these people are, etc.
I'm not sure if this has been asked already, I searched it and didn't find anything. But I was just wondering if anyone knows when filming is done of the Rent movie and when it will hit theaters? Thanks!!
i don't know when filming will be done but i know for sure that the movie will hit theaters November 11, 2005.
thank you so much! :)

i just saw Rent yesterday and it was so cool! there's more dancing than i thought. i'm pretty sure that the kids at my school will like it since it i already told some people about it and they seemed interested. i'm 12 and i'm a big renthead so i'm pretty sure my school will like it even some of my teachers like it. i'm a bit worried but us rentheads are doing our best to support it, right?
"I'm just worried about the messageboards(Here, compulsivebowlers.org, etc etc) being flooded with pointless "OMG THEY'RE SO HOT" topics.."
CRAP! I completly forgot about that aspect of it. It's going to be the revenge of the crazy Wicked fans.

Yep... I'll be all like "yay there was lots of posts" and find them to be pointless ones that crowd out the actual discussion topics.
Lets hope they don't invade all of them at least, right?

I don't think that'll be a problem on CB. They tend to eat people alive if they talk like that.
I understand the concerns, but I think the only way that the movie can hurt the show, is if it tanks. I don't even think that would do much damage.
Look at it this way, if the movie does well, it will bring more attention to the show and Broadway in general. And yes, at first, there will be a lot of buzz and all the "cool" or trendy kids will be singing the songs, but that will fade away and the true fans will still be there. We'll get our show to ourselves again.
As far as kids understanding the meaning of the show, well the more buzz and discussion the better.
