Well, Adam is Hot, There is a man dressed as a girl and people do tend to take awsome music and trash it. You just have to beilive that the true message behind it will shine through and know that someone, somewhere will get it and be affected by it. They will walk out of the movie theater with a different prespective on many issues than when they went in.
"You know just because you put a smiley face after it doesn't change the fact that it was an a-hole comment." ~ Sumofallthings
Personally, I take some comfort in the fact that the movie will have an R rating. That means that one of 2 types of people will generally be seeing this movie:
1.) People who are old enough and mature enough to appreciate the message and not just the overwhelming beauty of one Mr. Adam Pascal (or Idina, for that matter).
2.) People who are younger than 17, but care enough about the musical already to sneak in.
I know there'll be exceptions, but you take reassurance where you can get it
"You can only become truly accomplished at something you love. Don't make money your goal. Instead, pursue the things you love doing, and do them so well that people can't take their eyes off you."

Emcee-I put the adam poster idea in for you and all adam fans throughout this thing...
I still reiterate the whole kids will be kids thing I said before and I know for a fact that I am going to get ID when I go see this movie...I'm 20 but I look 12...not good
You're looking way too much into it, if you enjoy it, that's great, if others don't get it, that's there problem, not your's. Don't be so pretentious, and only think about how you will respond to it...
I think there will be people who see the movie and like it but don't get to the RENThead point of fandom. Part of the reason RENTheads are so into RENT is because they've seen and felt the live experience. I'm not sure a movie can affect people the same way, even if it is the same story being told.
WOW it is interesting to see how gritty and true it was back then and now everything is so fake. That reminded me of the drew lachey ads w/ him shirtless looking up @ the camera. How does this market the show for what it is? oy
When I was coming back from NYC, there was this college age girl on her cell phone talking about how she saw Rent the night before and about how it was totally awesome BECAUSE Drew Lachey was a total hottie. Grrrrrrrrrrrrr...
So the same thing happens with the show now. It'll be annoying if and when it occurs, but you shouldn't let it affect the way you see the movie.
"I mean, how many of us could honestly say that at one time or another he hasn't set fire to some great public building?"
Adam Pascal is hot...enough said. :) His hair is god...haha...sorry...this is just a sampling of the fact that the end is near.
As for not getting into R rated movies...hrm...I've never had that problem...I remember actually getting into one myself when I was like 12...perhaps the lady was a little out of it...bottom line my parents don't care with the whole R rated movie thing (as a matter a fact they took me to R rated movies)...I mean there are some r-rated movies that are just out there...but other times aside from some profanity and such I don't see why it's so awful...people just need to use their common sense and figure out if their kids can handle the stuff.
Okay...I seriously doubt people are going to say a movie "changed their life"...but you never know. I hope for the best.
I'm just giddy because I can't wait to see most of the OBC...in action...I wasn't exactly old enough at the time! :) I mean I'd love to see Idina do something other then Wicked.
No one can mess with WYLMC...and our little crazy rendition of Take Me...and LVB...cause it's how we survived long car rides to the city and home so we could get to Moot Court. RentHead memories. Haha...actually we were waiting for our car ride home and we were basically doing LVB along Madison Avenue and 50-something street in the evening...and then the driver finally pulled up and told us he wouldn't drive us home if we kept singing. I think he was more irked by what we were singing...then our actually singing...we can keep a tune...but we're definately not b'way material.
All I know is I am going to make it my business to watch Rent again before I watch the movie.
And if you're school turns into a living Will You Light My Candle...good luck.
With Chicago the movie and all I actually got to do an adaption of Jail Cell Tango/The Odyssey for a part of our group film project for English...and then I got to turn Antigone into the Westside story...:)...all good.
I'm a bit worried about this too...I have friends who love Gerard Butler just because of Phantom.
And it's kinda already started. Back in the fall, my 15 yo cousin asked me about (the actual conversation) Cousin: Rent. That thing the N'Sync guy was in. Me: What about it? Cousin: Isn't it a movie? Me: Um...will be next year. Cousin: Oh. I wanna see it. Me: Good for you. It's a good show. Cousin: Uh huh...is the guy hot? Me: WHAT? Cousin: You know the guy. The guy who the N'Sync guy played. Me: You mean Mark?
...and so on...
"During this performance, please feel free to let your cell phones and pagers ring willy-nilly. However, do remember that there are heavily-armed knights on stage and you might well be dragged up and impaled."
(Pre-curtain announcement at the new Broadway musical Monty Python's Spamalot)
I have to agree with a post Jacob made earlier. There will be fans of rent because of the music (it is catchy!) and of course adam, taye and everyone else. I just say, let them be. Everyone interprits everything differently. I am sure many people will enjoy the film more than others and will interprit the messages in their own way. I do admit that i am a fan of adam! I also know that i can appreciate the show and its messages. So yeah, it might be annoying but i am pretty sure that fangirls will arise. We will just have to deal and let them be. :)
"At the opening night party, they had clowns on stilts, jugglers, a chocolate fountain, popcorn, hot dogs. [My son] looked at me like I had been holding back. Like, 'This is what you do?' I had to tell him, 'No, no, darling. Opening nights don't usually look like this.' It's usually a dark bar with a bottle of vodka." ?Chitty Chitty Bang Bang's Jan Maxwell

I kind of agree with what everyone is saying. But I am also excited that the RENT movie is going to expand the fan base (the real one). Sure, some people might not get it. But think about how many people will be affected by it that have never gotten to see it onstage. That's what you have to think about.
"This table, he is over one hundred years old. If I could, I would take an old gramophone needle and run it along the surface of the wood. To hear the music of the voices. All that was said." - Doug Wright, I Am My Own Wife
David walked into the valley
With a stone clutched in his hand
He was only a boy
But he knew someone must take a stand
There will always be a valley
Always mountains one must scale
There will always be perilous waters
Which someone must sail

Im just exited for Idina to get a little more publicity. At scholl people ask who my favorite singer is and I'll say "Idina Menzel" and most give me a dumbfounded look and ask who is that? Now maybe they'll know who I mean :)
it's cool some of you are getting rent's message. jonathan's purpose has been fulfilled. nothing will get you closer to that message than actually living it.

Saa... It's still a scary thought, I'm worried myself...It's gonna suck...and a few of my guy friends are gonna be stupid about it, one just because he's opinionated, and the other...actually he's pretty cool, but I swear I'm gonna need some Perkiset to keep me from ripping off peoples heads...anyway...sorry about that just getting some of the freak-outs out.
"A guy gave a girl 12 roses, eleven real one fake, he said, when the last rose dies I'll stop loving you..."
Fantabulous428, I'm going to have to disagree with you... I have never seen RENT on Broadway, but it has affected me and I'm absolutely in love with it and its message.
I'm just worried about the messageboards(Here, compulsivebowlers.org, etc etc) being flooded with pointless "OMG THEY'RE SO HOT" topics... I am likely to put up with it for a while and then snap. Same goes for at school, I'll start lecturing random freshman and random stupid people and then... lets hope I don't get any more knots in my neck from anger, I already get enough from stress.
Although, on the bright side, this movie is bringing my friends Tierra and Danielle into RENT... Tierra loves Taye, so that's urging her to see it and she's the type of person who'll get the actual message. And Danielle hears me talk about it endlessly and is actually really excited about seeing the movie since she's not likely to see it on Broadway. She wants to see what the hype is about.
The best we can do is cross our fingers, try not to snap, and watch the movie 50 times a day.
You guys, I can totally understand you all worrying. Totally. But you have to realize, if you have friends who end up liking the Rent movie for all the wrong reasons, ie, the reasons you think they should like it, you totally just need to get new friends. I mean, what is the point in staying friends with people like that? Life is too short, no day but today. Ya know?
