2002 - Sutton Foster
2003 - Marissa Jaret Winokur
2004 - Idina Menzel
They're all young! And in most cases, these girls won over big name Broadway veterans such as Bernadette Peters and Donna Murphy who dominated this category in the 1900s. Thoughts or theories, anyone?

What can I say, Paul... Idina deserved it more than anyone this year. I mean, the one she was reall yup against was Kristin Chenoweth, and between the two of them, it was obvious that Idina would win it...
P.S. Never thought you'd see someone from BHS on the boards, did ya, lol

Posted: 6/15/04 at 10:28amI'm not sure Menzel is *that* young but, really, I think it's more to do with strong parts (finally) being written for younger women. Perhaps the days of young girls having to always play dewey and lovestruck supporting roles are over.

Posted: 6/15/04 at 11:34amTwo of those "young" women, are over 30, so I don't think it ever has anything to do with age. Rose won for playing a role MUCH younger than her actual age. It has more to do with what band wagon people jump on at the time. Not to say that some of these woman didn't deserve their trophy, but It's all very whimsical and trendy. What's hot at the moment or what the voters, publicists, etc... are trying to make hot and noticed.

Posted: 6/15/04 at 11:37amI think it's who did the best that year, at least this year. I could've seen Kristin winning, but any of the others...Not against those two. Most years, I'd have wanted Stephanie, but not this year. CONGRATS to Idina!
