Oh, I know she was sick... that's what they said. I wasn't knocking Idina at all! This just makes an interesting topic, I think, as I don't think lead actors (especially Tony winners) often have to leave their shows in the middle of the show.

Just wanted to report that at the 7:30 showing of Wicked this Sunday, it was announced that due to illness, Idina Menzel wouldn't be continuing and her standby Eden Espinoza (sp?) would be taking over in the 2nd act. This was one of the recent "shows for the understudies" as Chenoweth, Grey, and Butz were out in the first act. I was fortunate enough to see Cerveris and Esparza at the Kennedy Center's Sondheim festival two or three summers ago. Both gentlemen are excellent performers in their own respective ways. It just wasn't Esparza's year. He wouldn't have won for Taboo which, unfortunately, was a failure. I'm not bashing Taboo at all, either. I agree, Peter. Especially when the "dream ballet" sequence is included... a neat plot device and pretty music, sure. But it doesn't necessarily advance the plot. By contrast, every other song in WSS serves an obvious purpose, respectively. "Somewhere" is just a pretty song, though. :)

Just some advice:Unless you have a burning desire to teach... don't make it your "fall back." If teaching isn't something you will absolutely LOVE doing, don't waste your time getting a degree in it. If you love theatre, go for the degree in theatre. If you love teaching as much as your love theatre, if not more, the education back-up plan is acceptable.
