Okay, I've heard plenty of things (good and bad) about AMDA, but what about the American Academy of Dramatic Arts?

"This is what I trained to do, and this is what I love about theater. What I love about being an actress is being able to really look into myself and understand another human being. And out my own self, to shape and form and fashion a real human being--and to present that in such a way that people see something of themselves or their own understanding in that human being." --Phylicia Rashad

they are going bankrupt. I attended there when I was 17. OVER CROWDED is not the word. The teachers were bitter and nothing but a good lesson was learned there on what you SHOULD spend your money on next time.

I also say ... SCHOOL FOR FILM AND TELEVISION THE BIGGEST WASTE.. I will save a thread on that.

So, with all the stuff about AMDA and AADA, does anyone have a suggestion for a reputable theater program that is not associated with a major university?

The Mason Gross school @ Rutgers University in NJ has a very good program. It's not a MAJOR university and very inexpensive.

i've heard amazing things about that program. in my case, while I was on honor roll etc at school , I have a learning disability.. when it comes to doing Math and real subjects lol I just cant. I am interested and tried but, i always passed on extra credit projects. I would of loved to have gone out for Mason but, due to that I would never have gotten accepted.

I know a woman that attended AADA. She absolutely despised it and dropped out after her first year. I also know a girl who started this year at AADA, but I have yet to talk to her to get her opinion. If I hear from her soon, I'll let you know.

It was a great school when I went there and there are a number of us, from my class, that are still working professionally and doing quite well in theatre and films. That was, however, the class of 1980. I can't speak for what happens there now but the training that I got there was invaluable.

try a community college if you're grades aren't good enough to get into a 4 year university. A lot of community colleges have arts departments. Then when you've been there for a couple years you can transfer, and usually unless the school is a conservatory you're going to have to take "real subjects"
